LEXINGTON, Va.---The Chattanooga Mocs controlled the VMI Keydets in a 31-13 win at the Virginia post. It was the Southern Conference opening match for both programs.
 
The Mocs captured five of the first six classes building a 25-3 advantage. The win was actually clinched in a narrow loss at 174.
 
Chattanooga went 6-4 in bouts today but in a recurring theme, a 13-1 advantage in bonus points set the tone for the win. The squad took 24 of its 31 points at 125, 141, 165 and 197. Brayden Palmer opened with a forfeit win while Isaiah Powe (6:17), Kamdyn Munro (1:21) and David Harper (1:07) claimed falls.
 
The Mocs return home for four of the next five matches. Next up is Davidson next Sunday in Maclellan Gym.

• 7-2 start is the best since the 2015-16 SoCon co-Champs began with the same mark. Last time 8-2 or better? 2006-07 group went 16-1 starting 11-0 before a loss to No. 7 Central Michigan.
• 39-8 in SoCon openers…17-6-6 on the road.
• 5-0 when opening with VMI…4-0 in Lexington.
• 21 straight SoCon opening wins.
• 21 straight wins over VMI…26 of last 27 after a 4-match losing streak from 1994-97…17-3 all-time in Lexington.
• All seven wins on the season cliched at or before 174..four times it's ended at 165.
• Season-high three falls for the squad…2nd time this season with multiple falls for the Mocs…previous was Kent State win (Munro & Harper).
• Now 58-4 (.936) when recording the first takedown…5-1 today
• 9-0 at 149 led by Castillo's 7-0 in duals. 8-1 at 133 (Boarman) and 165 (Munro).
• 33-3 (.917) on the campaign at the 125-149 weight classes.
• 40th career match win for Castillo…27-7 Iin duals.
• Major Heck…senior is 4-0 at 157 on the year with three consecutive major decisions.
• Munro's fall at 165 is his fourth of the season…three of the four are in duals…tied for team lead with Austin Paradice (157) and Ethan Vergara (285).
• Powe and Munro lead the squad with 13 wins each…joined in double digits by Boarman (11), Castillo (11) and Desiante (10).
• First time in last four matches without a tech fall…14 in the previous three matches.
• Munro (13) is the new team leader in bonus points ahead of Boarman (12) and Harper (12)…Powe (9) and Ty Tice (8) round out top 5.
