RECAP: Wrestling Win Streak Continues

Chaz McDonald

Chaz McDonald got the Chattanooga Mocs off to a roaring start in a Southern Conference win over Davidson.

RESULTS

CHATTANOOGA---The Chattanooga Mocs claimed its eighth dual win of the season with a 28-13 triumph over Davidson Sunday afternoon in Maclellan Gym. The Mocs have won five in a row on the season and have 33 consecutive dual wins over the Wildcats with nary a defeat.

It was a dominant start. Chaz McDonald's first period pin set an early tone followed by a major at 133 by No. 31 Blake Boarman. Isaiah Powe and Matthew Williams followed with tech falls at 141 and 149 followed by another major from Lincoln Heck at 157.

It's the first dual win this season that was clinched after the 174 weight class. After jumping out to a 24-0 lead through 157, the Mocs gave up decisions at 165, 174 and 184 to cut the lead to 24-9, but also made certain any path to a win for the Wildcats was halted.

David Harper dropped a buzzer-beating take down to get the major at 197 before Davidson scored in the final match at 285.

"I think 125, 149 and 157 did a good job today, but I think there's more to expect in our other seven weights," Coach Kyle Ruschell shared post-match. "It's fun to see Chaz McDonald come in…that's two pins in the starting lineup (for him). It's fun to see him wrestle with some attitude, get out there and expect to get his hand raised. He gave a good example for the rest of our guys to follow.

"Harper is just going to get better and better the rest of the season. It's just a matter of wrestling more and building his conditioning back to what it was (before a year away from the sport)."

The Mocs remain in Maclellan Gym on Thursday night before next Saturday's matchup at Gardner-Webb. Thursday match is a "doubleheader" starting at 5 p.m., with the SoCon-leading women's basketball team tipping off at 7 p.m., in McKenzie Arena.
