Postgame Quotes

Rusty Wright, Head Coach
Opening statement after 41-10 win at Furman.
"They're a young football team, they lost a lot, but I knew we had a good week of practice coming in. I knew we'd come over here and play well, but this was a good day. We were gifted a couple turnovers, but we went out and made plays on the other ones. We made plays and gave us an opportunity to win."
Â
On game plan coming in.
"We are who we are. We line up and play. I won't change what we do just because someone else has something going on. We lined up, played our coverages, played our fronts, and just played. I thought they might put some more folks in the box based on what we show, but we got off to a good start which was huge."
Â
On biggest key to today's success.
"We did the things we were supposed to do against a football team where we had to do that. We didn't turn the ball over. First time all year. Good things will happen if you do that and do all the things you're supposed to do. I'm proud of the guys for battling and getting themselves to 2-1 in the league after everything. We still have plenty of things to work on."
Â
On depth and togetherness of team.
"Everyone has a different role. They take one guy away; another guy steps up. That's what they do. Today, it was Nunu's [
Javin Whatley] day. We say all the time, you have a new team every year. Until you prove you can win with the group you have and the guys around you, there's always a little doubt in the back of your mind. These types of games help with the confidence as a whole."
Â
Chris Victor, Sr.-DL
On the difference of matchups against Furman last year opposed to this year.
"We didn't execute on the defensive side of the ball, especially like we did today. We had to get our eyes on the ball in the right spots. We did a good job of that today."
Â
On what helped today's performance.
"Shoutout to our scout team. They play so hard during practice and prepared us extremely well for this game. It's good getting back to how we should be playing football. We're back to how we should be playing and only worrying about us."
Â
Dave Monnot III, Sr.-OL
On today's win.
"We haven't had it easy at all this season and we had a lot of things to get corrected. We had a great week of practice, and it showed. We have a lot left to go."
Â
On overall performance in the trenches.
"We played a really good, clean game. We have some ways to go and some room for improvement. We have a lot of room to grow. It comes down to practice. Iron sharpens iron. The defense is tough to go up against in practice and it helps in these situations."
Â
Javin Whatley, RS-Jr.-WR
Defense's efforts.
"Our defense played fantastic. We had Marquise [Freeman] who scored and didn't even know it. They set the momentum, and it really made it easy for us. When they play like that, it's easier for us to get in a rhythm on offense."
Â
Marquise Freeman, RS-Jr.-DE
On defensive effort from the group.
"Defense played their best game, by far. We really put on a show. I knew I caught it, but I also thought it hit the ground. Kobe [Joseph] kept yelling at me to go, so I did."Â
