CHATTANOOGA---The Chattanooga Mocs are sixth after 36 holes of the Steelwood Collegiate in Loxley, Ala. The Mocs shot 1-over 289 to open the event and came back with 7-under 281 in the afternoon for a 570 (-6) total at Steelwood Country Club.
It was the
Carson Johnson show in round one. He shot a career-best 69 with an eagle and two bidies to lead the squad.
Ethan Whitaker turned in his first par or better card with 72, while
Garrett Engle and
Braedon Wear had twin 74s.
Camden Braidech's 76 was the drop score.
Engle took the starring role for round two with 68. Whitaker added 70 ahead of Johnson's 71 and Wear's 72. Braidech had the hard luck drop with 73.
Johnson is top 10, tied for ninth at this point at 4-under (140). Whitaker and Engle join him in the top 20, tied for 17th at 2 under. Wear is four behind that duo with Braidech another three strokes beyond him.
No. 12 Illinois has the overnight lead. The Ilini's 17 under day was three ahead of Kansas State. KSU's Nick Mason has the individual lead at 14 under after rounds of 66 and 64.
The Mocs return to the tee Sunday at 10:30 a.m., Eastern time, paired with Rice and Memphis.

Notes
- 2nd entry in the Steelwood Collegiate.
- Johnson beat his career low 36-hole score by three shots…his 4-under 140 tops his effort in last spring's Colleton River Collegiate.
- Whitaker turned in his best 18 (70) and 36-hole scores (142) of his young career…he has qualified for each of the four fall events.
- 7 under is the best team round vs par this season but 281 is one shy of the total of 280 in the opening round of the Qubein Cup which turned into a win the last time out.
