CHATTANOOGA --- Chattanooga beach volleyball returns to action this weekend with the playing of the annual Scenic City Showdown, set to be hosted by the Mocs at the UTC Sports Complex from April 5-6.
The Mocs carry a five-match win streak into the weekend that includes earning 5-0 sweeps in each of the team's last four contests. UTC will be looking to keep that momentum this weekend as the race for the Ohio Valley Conference crown heats up.
UTC will open its weekend with a match that has serious OVC regular season title implications on the line, as the first-place UT Martin Skyhawks (9-9, 5-0 OVC) take on the second-place Mocs (6-8, 4-1 OVC) at 10 am ET on Friday in a match that could see UTC jump into a tie for the conference lead heading down the back half of the season. The Mocs will then close out their Friday slate with a 4 pm ET matchup against Austin Peay (7-9).
Chattanooga will then kick off the second day of festivities on Saturday with an 8 am ET clash with Tusculum (15-8). This will then be followed up at 2 pm ET with UTC's Senior Day recognition prior to the team's 2 pm ET rematch against Austin Peay. The Mocs will then close out their weekend slate with a match against Carson-Newman (17-7) beginning at 4 pm ET.
"Have a great opportunity in front of us to play the top team in our league on our home court," head coach Darin Van Horn said. "We can't wait for a hard-fought battle. The weekend will be filled with tough battles. Austin Peay was a close dual last matchup, and we get to compete against them on both days. Carson-Newman and Tusculum are also well-coached teams at the D2 level.'
"We also look forward to celebrating our seniors, as they have helped this program get it to where it is today! Joey (Madelina Myers-Osband) and Momo (Madi Morris) were a part of our first freshman class, and they helped build Chattanooga beach volleyball. They will forever be remembered for that!"
