CHATTANOOGA --- Will Poindexter is set to take the reigns as the new voice of Chattanooga women's basketball, the team announced in partnership with Mocs Sports Properties and Learfield IMG on Tuesday.
Poindexter follows in the footsteps of his former broadcast partner Larry Ward, who announced his retirement from calling Chattanooga women's basketball games this summer after a Hall of Fame career spanning 26 seasons with UTC. The duo has a familiarity that runs much deeper than the passing of the women's basketball torch, with Ward and Poindexter having spent numerous seasons as the radio play-by-play and color commentary duo for the Chattanooga Lookouts minor league baseball team.
"I'm thrilled to be able to extend my involvement with UTC, a place that is so special to me and my family," Poindexter said. "Continuing the work that Larry Ward has done for the last 26 years is very humbling. Larry has meant so much to me professionally and personally and I definitely would not have these opportunities without his, and Jim Reynolds', tutelage over the years."
"We're excited to add Will to the women's basketball broadcast," Mocs Sports Properties GM Zach Huston stated. "He's long been an integral part of our football show and has filled in admirably on basketball broadcasts both on radio and TV. It was a no-brainer when he showed interest."
Poindexter is not a new face (or voice) when it comes to Chattanooga Athletics. The radio veteran is currently entering what will be his 18th season as a member of the radio broadcast team for Chattanooga football, where he currently serves as a sideline analyst. He has also filled in on numerous ESPN broadcasts for the men's and women's basketball programs over the previous four seasons.
After a brief stint serving in the United States Air Force, the Chattanooga alum saw his first big radio break happen in 2006 when he joined the Chattanooga Lookouts as the Assistant Director of Broadcasting. Over the next seven seasons, Poindexter accompanied Ward on the call for Lookout games on ESPN 105.1 FM.
Poindexter received his degree in communication from UTC in 2007, and it was during his undergraduate career as a Moc that he tapped into his passion for the radio medium. Poindexter also served as a student reporter during that time writing for the University Echo, Chattanooga's school newspaper.
"I'm thankful for the continued support from Mark Wharton, Zach Huston, Learfield and all those within the UTC Athletic Department," Poindexter added.
With a plethora of new faces joining the UTC sideline and roster ahead of the 2024-25 season, Poindexter adds a new voice for Mocs Nation to get behind as well.
