CHATTANOOGA---The Chattanooga Mocs are coming off their earliest bye week since 2014. Yep, 10 years nearly to the day with Sept. 20, 2014 serving as the break with the squad 2-2 with a couple of near misses for losses.
Â
Same as it ever was. Ten years later, this edition of the Mocs are 0-3 with two narrow defeats. There's the 24-21 loss at 2023 FBS Bowl Winner Georgia State followed by a 10-3 home-opening loss to Mercer. As you can imagine, no one in the program feels any solace from being a couple of plays from 2-1 like the 2014 model wasn't in being a whisker from 4-0.
Â
Coach
Rusty Wright was here for both. He was stoic in reply with calm leadership on display.
Â
"We just went back and worked on ourselves," he shared when asked what he saw from his team through last week's reset. "We tried to take some things and find some guys that could help us in some situations and see who we could use moving forward.
Â
"We have to do things a lot better and give ourselves an opportunity to play well and see what happens from here on out."
Â
His experience tells him what's possible. That 2014 squad won nine of the next 11 games reaching the quarterfinals of the FCS Playoffs. That's the positive of an early bye week reset.
Â
Portland State enters at 0-3 as well in eerily similar circumstances. The Vikings lost to two FBS programs – at Washington State and at Boise State – to go with a ranked loss in the conference opener at Weber State. It's just the second time a Big Sky Conference opponent has visited the Mocs. The last? Weber State in
the 2016 FCS Playoffs.
Â
Chat with the Mocs is on the air tonight. The weekly coaches show features Coach Wright and a selected student-athlete with "Voice of the Mocs" Jim Reynolds from 7-8 p.m., every Monday at Miller's Ale House at Northgate. Tonight's special guest is offensive tackle
Dave Monnot III.

The show airs on WFLI 96.1 FM, 100.3 FM and 1070 AM locally as well as across the interwebsÂ

Notes
- Coach Rusty Wright is 4-1 coming off a bye week. Lone loss was last year at No. 8 Alabama. 4-0 against FCS opponents with all coming in SoCon play.
- Earliest bye week since 2017 week 1 when the season started in week "zero" in Montgomery, Ala., against Jacksonville State. The true bye week that season was Nov. 11.
- The earliest prior to this season without the asterisk was by one day: Sept. 20, 2014. That week 4 break saw the Mocs go 9-2 the rest of the way reaching the FCS Quarterfinals losing 35-30 at No. 1 New Hampshire.
- Last year, the Mocs played 10 straight weeks before getting a break prior to the regular season finale at Alabama.
