CHATTANOOGA---Army claimed the team title at the Southern Scuffle presented by Compound Sportswear. The Chattanooga Mocs
Sergio Desiante, the champion at 174, was named Most Outstanding Wrestler. He led four Mocs to the podium for the weekend.
The four medalists ties for second highest total in school history in the event. That was also done in 2012 and 2024 and ranks behind seven in 2006 in Greensboro, N.C. The two semifinalists –
Jackson Hurst (165) &
Sergio Desiante (174) – marked the third time in program history with multiple wrestlers reaching that point. There were two in 2006 and a high of three last year.
Desiante made the big splash with a top 5 win in the semifinals. He took the early lead with a first period takedown and dominated the bout in a 7-6 decision.
He picked up where he left off in the first period of the final against No. 10 Gaven Sax. An early deep shot netted the first takedown for a 3-0 lead. It was 3-1 headed into the second as Sax got another escape to get within one.
Desiante chose a neutral position for the third and kept Sax at bay for two minutes earning the historic win.
"We wanted to get that early takedown," Coach
Kyle Ruschell said. "It was to get a takedown and try to get to those legs. We knew where he was good. (Sax) wanted you on the legs, maybe not that exact shot, but that's where he wanted you to be in that crackdown position.
"But Serge did a great job of keeping it off the mat and getting that takedown really, really benefited him later in the match. It kept him from having to go down to start a period where Sax is really dangerous."
The Mocs earned two medals on the 133 podium.
Blake Boarman grabbed fifth with a hotly-contested bout with TK Davis. The 6-4 decision was decided in the final minute. Boarman chased David into a stalling call cutting the deficit to 4-3. With his foot wrapped, Davis turned and crawled to the edge of the mat to break the moment. Before he could get to off the surface, a takedown was awarded to Boarman for a 4-point swing and the win.
Luna lost his match but in a dual with 20th-ranked Cleveland Belton. He dueled the Sooners starter to the buzzer in a 4-2 decision. The true freshman from Mountain View, Calif., is a likely redshirt this season for the Mocs but made a big impact in his first Scuffle appearance.
Hurst completed his weekend in sixth at 165. He's just the second Mocs wrestler at that class to place joining Brandon Wright who was eighth in 2012. That's the opposite of 133 where Boarman and Luna became the ninth and 10th medalists at that weight.
"I think we've seen our guys really bond together as a group and wrestling for each other," Ruschell added. "You saw them in the crowd cheering each other on and that's what it's all about."
At the end of the tournament though, all eyes are on Desiante.
Army entered the final day in pole position with 97 points and a tourney-best seven in the semifinals. Oklahoma surged into the lead before the finals by a slim point, 121.4-120.5 over the Black Knights with Penn State looming in third with 110.5.
The Black Knights stormed back over the final 10 matches for the triumph. They finished with 132.5 points which was six better than OU and the Nittany Lions tied in second with 126.5.
