Todd Earns First Weekly Honor

Kamari Todd

True freshman Kamari Todd was a force in a strong Chattanooga Mocs defensive effort in last weekend’s win at VMI.

First Look
Chattanooga Mocs freshman defensive back Kamari Todd made just his second career start Saturday at VMI. And oh what a performance it was. The true freshman from Gardendale, Ala., made the most of his opportunity earning Tennessee Sports Writers Association Defensive Player of the Week honors.

Breakdown
  • Todd collected 14 tackles with 1.5 for loss. Both are career highs just six games into his collegiate journey.
  • Led a defensive effort that allowed just 2 FGs.
  • Led a defense that held the Keydets to 2-of-12 on third downs (16.7%). VMI came into the game third in the league converting 40.4 percent on the season.
  • Held Keydets to just 263 yards total offense with just 45 on the ground (1.7 ypc). Both totals were well below season averages of 316.8 & 71.8 yds/gm.
  • Led a defensive effort that included a goal-line stand to start 3rd quarter. VMI had 1st & goal at the 3 and TWO straight tries from the 1 that were all rebuffed maintaining the 14-3 lead.
  • 14 is the third-highest tackle total for a Chattanooga defender this year. The other two – 19-Kam Baah-Slay & 17-Zion Rutledge – came the prior weekend against The Citadel.
  • Six of the 14 stops were solos. That's just the fourth time this year a Moc had six or more solo tackles in a contest.
  • 1.5 TFLs in a game ranks tied for second on the current Mocs roster with three others. The top number? 2.5 by DT Jamarr Jones, also last weekend at VMI.
  • Todd is fifth on the team in tackles with 25 including 2.0 TFL.
  • First POTW award for a Moc this season.

Quotable
Coach Rusty Wright – "Kamari has worked extremely hard. He probably played his best since he's been here, and we needed him. He stepped up, learning on the fly and hopefully just continues to get better every week."
