Softball Heads to Gardner-Webb for Spring in the Springs

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The Mocs softball team is on the road to Boiling Springs, N.C., for the Gardner-Webb "Spring in the Springs" Tournament this weekend.
 
The Mocs will open up the tournament against IU Indy Friday morning. UTC came away with a 9-8 win over the Jaguars last weekend at the Frost Classic. Friday afternoon and Saturday morning, UTC will take on Stony Brook and close out Saturday with host Gardner-Webb. The two will meet again Sunday in the finale.
 
Games against Gardner-Webb will be streamed on ESPN+ and live stats will be available for all games. Check GoMocs.com for links.
 
ABOUT CHATTANOOGA (8-7)
Chattanooga held off Jacksonville State Wednesday night 3-2, to extend its win streak to six games. Peja Goold struck out eight while Presley Williamson and Jayce Purdy went yard to provide scoring.
 
The Mocs are hitting .294 with 21 doubles, two triples and 15 home runs while driving in 56 runs. UTC is 10-of-14 on stolen bases led by Cam Cernuto who is 5-of-5. Olivia Lipari leads the team at the plate with a .415 batting average with five home runs. Acelynn Sellers, second on the team with a .391 batting average, leads the SoCon with seven home runs and 19 RBI. Kailey Snell has a team-best four sacrifice hits and is third on the team, hitting .380.
 
In the circle, Goold leads the Mocs with a 2.67 ERA and is 4-3 with two shutouts and five complete games. She leads the conference with 50 strikeouts in 42 innings pitched and has an opponent batting average of .219. Taylor Long is 2-0 with 30 strikeouts in 23.1 innings while Alyssa Lavdis, second on the team with a 4.48 ERA, has the Mocs lone save on the year.
 
MOCS AGAINST THE FIELD
IU INDY (3-8): Chattanooga is 4-1 against the Jaguars (formerly IUPUI) after getting a 9-8 win last weekend at the Frost Classic. Indy has wins over CSU Northridge, Canisius and Lamar. Callie Dickerson has a team-best batting average .435 with three doubles, a home run and nine RBI. Molly Kabe has a team-best two home runs while Morgan Gilbert is 3-for-3 in stolen bases. Dickerson leads the team in the circle as well with a 4.77 ERA. She is 1-0 in four appearances.
 
Stony Brook (1-6): This will be the first meeting between the two programs. The Seawolves opened the season with a win over Iowa State, but dropped the next six contests. On loss came against SoCon's Mercer (6-9) in one of only two games played in the Roar City Invitational hosted by Tennessee State in Nashville. Their final three games were canceled due to weather conditions. Alyssa Costello is hitting a team-best .400 and has one of the team's two home runs. Kyra McFarland has a team-high seven runs batted in while hitting .375 with a pair of triples and a double. Jordyn Fray has a team-best 4.67 ERA. Gabrielle Maday has the lone win for the Seawolves and leads the team with eight strikeouts in 14.2 innings pitched.
 
Gardner-Webb (7-7): The Mocs have won the lone meeting between the two teams. The Runnin' Bulldogs won three out of four games at their opening tournament. GWU split with West Georgia and then run-ruled Drexel in back-to-back games. After beating Iona in a stand-alone game, Gardner-Webb then won two out of three games played in the Red and Black Classic, beating Iona again and splitting with Sacred Heart. Both games against Robert Morris were canceled. GWU split a double-header with Western Carolina then dropped all four games played in the Hilltopper Classic. Ella Christopher leads her team with a .542 batting average, four home runs, four doubles and a triple along with 17 RBI. Araceli Pesqueira also has a team-best four homers along with five doubles and 11 runs batted in. Hannah Frye leads GWU in the circle with a 2.03 ERA and 19 strikeouts in 31.0 innings pitched. Opponents are hitting .277 against her with just five multi-base hits, all doubles. She is 3-1 with two complete games.
