Beach Volleyball Once Again Splits Its Matches to Close Out Its Time in Jacksonville

Mocs pick up a victory over Saint Leo before falling to No. 19 North Florida; end the weekend 2-2 overall.

Final result sheets for Saturday's matches in Jacksonville are not yet available. When they become available, they will be posted to the Chattanooga beach volleyball schedule page on GoMocs.com.

Jacksonville, Fla.--- Chattanooga beach volleyball split its two Saturday matches to close out its time at the Duuuval Duals, with the Mocs picking up a win over Saint Leo before dropping their tournament finale against No. 19 North Florida.

The Mocs grinded out a tightly contested 3-2 win over Saint Leo to kick off their final day of action in Jacksonville before suffering a 5-0 defeat to the host UNF squad, putting a pin in the season-opening weekend for the Mocs. UTC ended up finishing the weekend 2-2 overall.

"I think the weekend was exactly what we expected," head coach Darin Van Horn said. "Learned a lot about ourselves and what pieces we need to sharpen. Each team pushed us in their own way and I felt we pulled the best out of a top-20 team in UNF.

"We had tough moments and mental struggles, but we competed to the end. It's a good starting point for us this season."

The Mocs return to action Friday, March 7 by traveling to Mount Berry, Georgia, for the Berry Kick-Off Tournament. Running March 7-8, Chattanooga is slated for matches against Florida Southern College, Truett McConnell and Berry College.

Chattanooga vs. Saint Leo – W, 3-2
The Mocs kicked off their Saturday with an early morning clash against Saint Leo, and UTC's Court 4 pairing of Joy Courtright and Julia Lawrence got right to work, taking a commanding 21-10, 21-13 victory in their match to give the Mocs an early 1-0 advantage in the match.

After dropping a result in the No. 5 spot, the Mocs responded right back with Paige Gallentine and Kit Gresham once again showcasing their clutch genes by picking up a 21-14, 21-12 victory on Court 3. Now leading 2-1, the Mocs found themselves a win away from picking up the team win.

UTC wouldn't have to wait long for that W to come, as the Court 1 duo of Neva Clark and Corina Vale put together a clean, two-set win over Saint Leo's Kayla Bavel and Olivia Burka, grabbing 21-17 and 21-16 wins in each respective set to sweep their way to a match-clinching victory.

"We did a great job finding and executing our game plan during our match," Clark said. "Clinching the dual for the team is always an incredible feeling, and it was all possible because of their effort and support!"

McKenna Faychak and Maddie Lecik would drop their Court 2 match, 21-18 and 21-14, but by then the match had already been decided as the Mocs went into the afternoon riding a 3-2 win over Saint Leo overall.

Chattanooga vs. No. 19 North Florida – L, 5-0
The Mocs then had the tall task of taking on current No. 19 ranked North Florida, a rematch of Chattanooga's 2024 NCAA Tournament match just over a year ago.

While UTC hung tough with the Ospreys, the Sandy Mocs just couldn't quite get on the board in the match as UNF ended up picking up wins on all five courts to hand Chattanooga a 5-0 loss to close out the weekend.

The Court 4 duo of Joy Courtright and Julia Lawrence put together UTC's most admirable performance of the day, forcing their match to go a full three sets after picking up a 21-18 set win to kick off the match. However, a strong finish from the Ospreys in that match saw Courtright and Lawrence fall, but not without a fight.
