Men’s Golf Finishes Strong in Round 1

Evan Rogers

Evan Rogers led the Chattanooga Mocs to a scintillating first round finish at the Visit Knoxville Collegiate

First Look
Round one is in the books for the Chattanooga Mocs men's golf. The Mocs opened the season today at Tennessee's Visit Knoxville Collegiate shooting 281 at Tennessee National. The 1 over total puts the squad in ninth overall against a strong field.

Breakdown
  • It was a tough start but strong finish. The Mocs were 9 over through eight holes and 8 over at the turn. Evan Rogers, Camden Braidech, Griffin Law and Thad Whitfield combined to shoot 7 under on the back to get back to 1 over for the day.
  • Rogers was the highlight. His day started with bogeys at one and two, birdies at three and four followed by a double at five. He was 2 over through eight but birdied seven of the next 10 holes to shoot 65 for his first collegiate round.
  • Braidech stumbled out of the gate with double and bogey on one and two. He proceeded to post three birdies and 13 pars the rest of the way for an even-par 70.
  • Law bogeyed the three of the first four in his first collegiate 18 as well. He settled in to play level the rest of the way to share the final two counting spots with Whitfield at 73.
  • Rogers had nine total birdies on the day including going 5-5 on the final five holes. He shot 30 on the back nine.

Coaches Corner
"Proud of how the guys fought back today. Got off to a shaky start, but Ev, Cam and G all did a great job fighting back and steadying the ship. That was a huge finish from Evan to keep us in this event. The back nine is definitely more scorable, but I felt our guys get more comfortable as the day went on, especially the two freshmen. Looking forward to tomorrow." – Coach Blaine Woodruff

Notes
  • The 281 team score is the lowest opening round tally since 278 on Sept. 8, 2008. That was a 10-under total at Council Fire Golf Club in the Scenic City Invitational. The Mocs went on to win the event with a school-record 45 under (819). It was the first of two wins in a row following up with the crown at the prestigious Carpet Capital Collegiate. The wins came in a 7-day period.
  • 281 is the third-lowest season opening score in school history: 272 (-12), 2007 Scenic City Invitational; 278 (-10), 2008 Scenic City Invitational.
  • Rogers' 65 is the lowest score in a season's first round since 64 (-8) by Tripp Harris on Sept. 10, 2007. This was also in the Scenic City Invitational at Council Fire. The Mocs finished second that year to Charlotte.
