CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The Chattanooga softball team swept the second day of the Frost Classic with wins over UIC (8-1) and Cornell (2-1/8) to improve to 8-6 overall.
Raven Jones and
Ava Cowart each went 3-for-5 Saturday. Jones had a double, RBI and scored a run and Cowart drove in three and scored twice.
Taylor Long picked up her 400
th career strikeout in the win over UIC and
Emery Bales came on in relief to pick up her third win of the season.
GAME ONE: Chattanooga 8, UIC 1
Chattanooga scored runs in each of the first four innings and led off the bottom of the first with a single off the bat of
Ava Cowart. She scored the first run on an infield groundout.
The Mocs hung three runs on the Flames in the second on two hits. With two outs,
Lexi Cooley drew a walk and scored on a
Zoe Wright triple to the fence in left center. Cowart drove her in with a single that dropped in behind second. A fielding error, allowing
Annika Segedi to reach, plated Cowart to make it a 4-0 advantage for the home team.
With the bases loaded in the fourth on two walks and an error, Wright reached on a fielder's choice that caught
Chloe Lackey at the plate for the second out. Cowart, back at the plate, drove in two more runs in the inning.
UIC scored a run in the third on a double to deep right field, scoring the runner from first.
Cowart was 3-for-4 with three RBI and scored two runs.
Baileigh Pitts went 2-for-3 with a walk, RBI and run scored.
Taylor Long went the distance, striking out eight in the win with three walks. She gave up one run on six hits.
GAME TWO: Chattanooga 2, Cornell 1/8 innings
Auburn Karls hit a one-out sac fly in the bottom of the eighth, driving in
Jade Gainer from third for the game-winning run over Cornell Saturday evening at Frost Stadium.
Gainer entered the game as a pinch runner and was placed at third in accordance with the extra innings rule. With one out, Gainer took third on a passed ball. Karls, on a 3-2 count sent a long fly into left field to sacrifice in the game winning run.
Cornell struck first, scoring in the top of the first. The Mocs tied it up in the bottom half on a wild pitch.
Annika Segedi and Baileight Pitts reached on back-to-back walks and Segedi advanced on a fly out to right field. In the next at bat, Segedi sprinted home on a wild pitch to make it 1-1.
Chattanooga stranded eight runners over the next six innings included bases loaded in the second.
Emery Bales came on in relief to pick up her third win of the season. She struck out one in five-and two-thirds innings with one run on six hits.
