Softball Walks it Off in Six to Complete Sweep of ETSU

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- Annika Segedi belted a two-run double to left center to give the Chattanooga softball team its seventh walk-off victory of the season with a 13-5 win over East Tennessee State in six innings in a Southern Conference matchup.

The Mocs improve to 18-21-1 on the year and 6-6 in league play while the Bucs fall to 15-20 overall and 3-9 against the SoCon.

Chattanooga took a quick lead in the first, tied it in the third, went ahead for good in the fourth and walked it off in the sixth. The Mocs scored in five of the six innings and put five on the board in the fourth and sixth innings.

ETSU scored three runs in the fifth to pull within two runs, 7-5, but UTC had six unanswered over the next two innings to earn its seventh walk-off win of the season and second of the series against the Bucs.

Leading 8-5 going into the home half of the sixth, Anna Dovey drew a walk on a full count. Pinch runner Izzy Carlyle took second on a single from Mia Leone. Lexi Cooley came in to run for Leone and Raven Jones sacrifice both into scoring position.

Chloe Lackey was hit by the pitch to load the bases with one out and Jade Gainer picked up an RBI on a hit by pitch, scoring Carlyle to make it 9-5. Zoe Wright drove in the Mocs' 10th run of the game on a single up the middle and a third hit by pitch in the inning gave UTC an 11-5 advantage.

With bases loaded, Annika Segedi drove a would-be triple in almost any other circumstances to the fence in left center, plating the two need runs for the run-rule victory.

Segedi was 2-for-4 with four RBI, a double and a sac bunt. Dovey was 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and a double. Mia Leone was 2-for-3 with two RBI, a double and a walk and Wright was 2-for-3 with a sac bunt, a stolen base. She and Gainer, who had an RBI, scored two runs and Ava Cowart drew two walks and was hit by a pitch to score three runs.

Emery Bales earned the win, going three innings and giving up three runs. Taylor Long got the start and struck out two but exited with one out in the second. Sophia Guerra entered in the fifth, struck out one, and did not give up a run in the final one-and-2/3 innings.

HOW IT STARTED
Leone reached on a fielding error with bases loaded to score Cowart who led off the first with a walk to put Chattanooga on the board first. The Bucs took the lead in the second with two runs on two hits but stranded three.

In the third, Dovey hit a ground-rule double and advanced to third on a passed ball. She scored the tying run in the inning on a double to left center by Leone.

The Mocs exploded for five runs in the fourth on three hits and one error. Lackey led off with a single. A sac bunt by Jade Gainer ended up a fielder's choice and Lackey out at second. Gainer stole second and reached third on a single from Wright. Wright stole second and Cowart drew a walk to load the bases.

ETSU made the first of two pitching changes in the inning. A fielding error on the Bucs sent a run home and kept the bases loaded to give UTC a 3-2 lead. Baileigh Pitts drew a four-pitch walk to make it 4-2 and Dovey singled to center field and the Moc lead grew to 5-2.

After another pitching change, Leone walked to make it 6-2 and a fielder's choice got the Mocs runner out at third for the second out, but Pitts was able to score UTC's fifth run of the inning to put Chattanooga up 7-5.

In the fifth, the Bucs took back three runs to draw within two at 7-5 and UTC added it's eighth run in the bottom half of the inning, scoring Cowart on a Segedi single.
