Softball Drops Pair to Catamounts Saturday

CULLOWHEE, N.C. --- The Chattanooga softball team fell in a pair Southern Conference games Saturday afternoon in Cullowhee, N.C., to Western Carolina. The Mocs fall to 18-23-1 overall and 6-8 against the league while WCU improves to 29-17 on the year and 10-4 against the SoCon.
 
Baileigh Pitts went 3-for-5 with a home run, RBI and scored two runs. Mia Leone and Anna Dovey each had two hits including a double and two RBI.
 
GAME ONE: Chattanooga 2, Western Carolina 3
The Mocs fell 3-2 on a walk-off to Western Carolina in the opening game of the Mocs Saturday double header. The Catamounts struck early with a run in each of the first two innings.
 
Chattanooga answered in the fourth when Mia Leone doubled to right-center to score pinch runner Izzy Carlyle. The Mocs evened the game in the sixth inning on Baileigh Pitts' solo home run to center field, her team-leading fifth blast of the season.
 
A bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh drove in the game winner for the Catamounts.
 
Leone went 2-for-3 with an RBI double while Pitts went 1-for-2, was hit by a pitch and had a solo homer. Taylor Long struck out five in the contest.
 
GAME TWO: Chattanooga 3, Western Carolina 11/5 innings
Western Carolina got out to an early 5-0 lead on a bases loaded two-RBI single and a two-run home run in the first inning.
 
Chattanooga struck back and cut the lead to two runs in the third. Zoe Wright led off with a single and stole second. Annika Segedi took first on a hit-by-pitch and Pitts loaded the bases with a single. Anna Dovey hit a two-run single to right field. She advanced to third on a fielding error by the right fielder and advanced to third as Pitts scored on an RBI ground out by Leone to make it 5-3.
 
The Catamounts picked up another run in the third and five more in the fifth on a pair of home runs to claim a five-inning, run-rule victory.
 
Anna Dovey went 2-for-2 with a double, a walk and drove in two runs. Pitts went 2-for-3 and scored a run.
