Simmons Qualifies for Finals; Haney Fifth in the Javelin

CULLOWHEE, N.C. --- The first day of competition at the Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships for Chattanooga saw two finals qualifications and a fifth place finish in the javelin.
 
Norah Haney finished fifth overall in the open javelin event Monday night and picked up four points for the Mocs. She earned a spot in the finals and threw her longest distance of the competition on her first throw to finish fifth with a distance of 34.56.
 
In the 100 meter dash, reigning SoCon champion Ryleigh Simmons qualified for the final on Tuesday finishing third overall and second in her heat with a time of 11.91. She made it two finals with a fourth place finish overall, second in the first heat with a time of 24.36.
 
In the 10,000 meter final, Leah Boyd Mitchell ran a personal best time placing 10th at 37:40.08. Andrea Ellis was one spot behind at 37:51.43. Scarlett Nash (38:04.14) and Emma Thweatt (39:47.84) crossed the finish line third and fourth respectively for the Mocs.
 
Ava McGue ran a 59.92 in the 400 meter and Kolbee Webb posted a personal best time in the race at 1:01.34. Taylor Crawford just missed a finals qualification in the 800 meter placing ninth with a time of 2:17.95.
 
The 1500 meter prelims were canceled due to a smaller number of contestants and will go straight to final on Tuesday.
 
Haney completes the heptathlon Tuesday with the javelin, long jump and long jump beginning at 9:30 a.m. She is currently ninth with 2,223 points. She placed eighth in the high jump, ninth in the 200 meters and posted season-best times in the 100 meter hurdles and the shot put.
 
Other Tuesday events include the high jump with Halle Carden, the 1500 meter, the 5000 meter and the 4x400 meter relay to close competition.
