Chattanooga went 1-1 on Friday at the Queen City Classic

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Chattanooga fell to Queens (N.C.) before knocking off Presbyterian later this evening to split the opening day of the Queen City Classic. The win and the loss keeps Chattanooga at a .500 record of 4-4 through eight matches.

Series Notes
Chattanooga moves to 0-2 all-time against Queens (NC)... Today was the first meeting between the two schools since 2022… Also was the first time the Mocs and Royals have played one another in Charlotte.

UTC moves to 3-0 all-time against Presbyterian, with tonight's match being the first since 2022… The Mocs are now 2-0 in neutral site contests against the Blue Hose.

Chattanooga 1, Queens (NC) 3
At the start of the match it was all Chattanooga, as it scored seven of the first eight points behind five kills. As the set progressed, Queens tried to claw their way back, but the Mocs had an answer for every run, as it led 17-12 after consecutive attack errors by the home team. With the score at 23-18, Chattanooga ended the set with consecutive kills from Kynli Kirkendoll and Elena Vukmanov to go up 1-0.

The Royals came out hot in set two, moving ahead 5-1. It did not take Chattanooga long to get back within one point though as an attack error by Queens made it 11-10. The rest of the set was all Queens though, as it led by as many as nine points at 21-12. The Mocs tried to make a late run, staving off five set points on Caiti Barthel's service rotation, but Queens hung on for a 25-21 to tie the match at one apiece.

Chattanooga went down three points in the early goings of set three, before getting back within one point at 9-8 thanks to a kill from Ashley Reynolds. However, Queens scored five straight points to put momentum back on their side. UTC kept fighting, as three straight points started by a kill from Vukmanov put the Blue and Gold back within just one point at 16-15. Later in the set though when it mattered most, the Royals did what they had to, scoring the final two points to win 25-20 and go up 2-1 in the match.

The Mocs took their first lead since the first set in the early goings of set four, as an attack error put them up 5-4. It turned out to be Chattanooga's only lead of the set as Queens shifted the set back in their favor. Despite the Queens momentum, the Mocs only trailed 18-16 after a kill from Addison Walker followed by an attack error. UTC just scored one more point the rest of the way though as Queens took the set 25-17 to earn the 3-1 win.

Individual and Team Stats

Kirkendoll led UTC on both sides of the net with 11 kills and seven total blocks, both of which tie season highs. She also held a hitting percentage of .500.
Jordin Glass delivered a career-high 10 digs to go along with seven kills and four total blocks.
Barthel with 15 digs and Finley Hilliard with a career-high 14 digs each contributed defensively.
Reynolds nearly had a double-double with 25 assists and nine digs to go with four total blocks.
Emma Norris with 14 kills and Elizabeth Layson with 13 kills led the attack for Queens.
Chattanooga had a season-high 12 total blocks in the loss.
Queens outhit Chattanooga 60-46 and held a .207 hitting percentage to Chattanooga's .173.

Chattanooga 3, Presbyterian 1

Chattanooga scored the first three points of the match, capped off by a kill from Kirkendoll. The set remained close as time went on with the Mocs leading 16-13 after a kill by Glass. PC didn't back down, eventually taking the lead at 19-18 after a Chattanooga attack error. Chattanooga and Presbyterian both had a set point later on but neither side took advantage as the score read 25 apiece. An attack error by the Blue Hose followed by a kill from Delaney Wingenbach gave UTC the 27-25 win.

The Mocs had to play from behind in set two, as PC scored the first four points, and later on Chattanooga trailed by as many as six points at 15-9 and 20-14. The Mocs did not give up, eventually tying the set at 22 after a quick 6-2 run, highlighted by four kills. Like the first set, both teams had set points, except this time it was two set points that each team killed off. With the score knotted at 27, consecutive kills by Glass gave Chattanooga the set 29-27.

Knowing it had to win to stay alive, the Blue Hose controlled the fourth set, scoring five of the first six points and not looking back. Back-to-back kills later on pushed Presbyterian's lead to 15-7. PC ended up leading by as many as 11 points on its way to a 25-19 win to keep the match going.

Presbyterian used the momentum it produced in set three to the start of set four, as it led 10-7. The Blue Hose lead reached as high as 14-9 with it looking like they were in control. The Mocs flipped the script though, eventually taking the lead at 19-18 after a service ace from Kirkendoll capped off a 9-3 run. Chattanooga capped off the match by scoring the final five points to end the set at 25-19 and win the match.

Individual and Team Stats

Mallory Merz led Chattanooga in the win, posting her first career double-double with 23 assists and 13 digs. The 23 assists are a career high while the 13 digs tie a career best for the junior.
Kirkendoll also had a double-double with 10 kills and a career-high 10 digs.
Glass posted 13 kills in the win to lead the attack. She also had seven digs and three total blocks.
Rose was also in double figures for Chattanooga offensively with 11 kills and four total blocks.
Reynolds posted 22 assists and eight digs in the win while Barthel led the Mocs with 20 digs at libero.
Both teams had 57 kills in the match, but Chattanooga had a higher hitting percentage at .205 to Presbyterian's .187.
The Mocs had 10 total blocks to the Blue Hose's five.
