Denver, Colo. (UPI) – The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, led by No. 1 singles player
Phyllis Blackwell, captured its third straight national title in the AIAW Small College National Tennis Championships.
Blackwell gained a bit of revenge Saturday by defeating Diane Gilruth of the College of Charleston, 6-4, 6-2. Gilruth defeated Blackwell in the No. 1 finals last year.
In the head-to-head competition, Chattanooga displayed its strength as team members defeated Charleston in every championship flight. Chattanooga wound up with 90 points, while Charleston had 72.
Chattanooga and Charleston were tied for the team lead going into the final day of competition with the two schools competing in all nine championship flights.
Defending No. 2 singles champion
Elizabeth Sharp easily retained her title with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Pam Mitchell of Charleston. Sharp has never lost a match in AIAW national competition.
The tournament's other defending singles champion,
Kathy Kolankiewicz of Chattanooga, successfully retained her No. 4 singles title with a two set, 7-6, 6-4, victory over Charleston's Evelyn Castillo.
In the No. 1 doubles final, Chattanooga's Sharp and Kolankiewicz put away Charleston's Gilruth and Castillo in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.
The College of William & Mary finished third in the tournament with 42 points, followed by Cal State Bakersfield with 39.5 and Stetson University of Florida, with 36.
