Davidson, N.C. ? Five players combined for 70 kills and freshman setter Anna Bradbury produced a match-high 46 assists as Davidson (9-16, 4-8) defeated Chattanooga (13-12, 8-3) in a Southern Conference volleyball match on Sunday afternoon in Davidson, N.C. The Wildcats won 30-27, 28-30, 30-20 and 30-28.
Davidson got off to a strong start, pulling out to a 12-9 lead before the Lady Mocs rallied to tie the score at 12-12. After the Wildcats took a 17-15 advantage, UTC scored five of the next six points to pull ahead 20-18 and would hold the lead until Davidson knotted the score at 24-24.
Following a point by the Lady Mocs to make the score 25-24, the Wildcats notched the next four points to take a controlling 28-25 lead before going on to close out the game, 30-27.
Chattanooga battled back in Game 2, taking leads of 13-6 and 20-11 before seeing those leads evaporate behind a 9-1 Davidson run that left the score at 21-20. The Lady Mocs then put together a 5-1 run to push their lead to 25-21. It would be enough as UTC withstood a late Wildcats rally to secure a 30-28 victory and tying the match at 1-1.
Game 3 was a different story as Davidson took control early with a 17-8 lead keyed by another 9-1 run. A 6-2 Chattanooga run made the score 19-14 before the Wildcats responded with an 11-6 run to close the game with a 30-20 victory.
The two teams battled deep into the fourth game, with neither club leading by more than three points the entire way. With the Lady Mocs leading 28-26, and on the verge of sending the match to a fifth and final game, Davidson responded with four straight points, three by kill, to take home the game, 30-28, and the match 3-1.
Senior outside hitter Katie Pierucci paced Davidson with match-highs of 20 kills and 27 digs while junior middle blocker Kittery Neale and freshman outside hitter Sarabeth Peele finished with 15 and 14 kills, respectively. Defensively, senior libero Lindsay Woeste added 19 digs while senior libero Courtney Cron finished with 12 digs. Freshman middle blocker Jorden Benedict and junior outside hitter Tierney Hodge rounded out the double-figure kill performances with 11 and 10 kills, respectively.
For Chattanooga, junior libero Lara Newberry (Chattanooga, Tenn.) led the defense with 26 digs and was joined by senior outside hitter Jamie Engel (Troy, Ill.) with 20 digs. Freshman setter Bailee Chastain (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) paced the offense with 35 assists, as well as 10 digs, and senior middle blocker Leslee Ball (Sycamore, Ill.) led the team with 13 kills.
Freshman outside hitter Aurore Kullak (Beloeil, Belgium) added 16 digs and seven kills while senior outside hitter Kelsey Amundson (Houston, Texas) contributed 11 digs.
The Lady Mocs wrap up their three-match road trip on Tuesday, October 23 when they visit the Citadel for a 4 p.m. contest.
