The UTC Mocs basketball
team got off to a slow start, but finished strong in running away to a 91-63
win over neighboring Berry (Ga.) College in The McKenzie Arena in exhibition action.
The Vikings gave the Mocs a run early leading as late as
1:15 in the first half (39-38). Behind
three-pointers by senior Kevin Bridgewaters (Columbia, Ky.)
and freshman Stephen McClellan (Cohutta, Ga.), UTC took a 44-39 lead into the
break. The Mocs turned the defensive
heat up in the second half to pull away for the 28-point win.
The Mocs were led in scoring by junior Stephen McDowell (Indianapolis, Ind.)
who hit four treys en route to a 20-point night. A transfer from South Carolina, McDowell sat out the 2006-07
season because of NCAA rules. His last
game action came in the 2006 NIT Championship game for USC.
Junior Nicchaeus Doaks (Trenton, Tenn.)
added 16 points and 14 rebounds in 25 minutes of action. Bridgewaters pitched in 16 points as well as
five assists and three steals.
The Mocs open the season this Friday, Nov. 9, hosting Covenant College.
Game time is at 7 p.m.
