ANAHEIM, Calif.-- ESPN Regional Television, Inc., announced today that the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga will compete in the inaugural Anaheim Classic, an eight-team, 12-game, bracketed collegiate basketball tournament. The event will take place Nov. 22, 23 and 25 at the Anaheim Convention Center.
The field includes two NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 teams from last season, Southern California and Southern Illinois, as well as NCAA first-round participant Miami-Ohio. Complete tournament action will air on either ESPN2 or ESPNU.
Two teams in the 2007 Anaheim Classic field participated in the 2007 National Invitation
Tournament. South Alabama played in the opening round of the NIT, and Mississippi
State advanced to the semifinals.
San Diego and California-Irvine join the Mocs to comprise the field. All eight of the teams in the field advanced to the semifinals of their post-season conference tournaments.
“We are excited about this opportunity” said Chattanooga head coach John Shulman. “This is a very strong field and we get to open the tournament with the team that ended last season number seven in the RPI. I think tournaments like this are good opportunities to prepare for the conference season.”
The Mocs play the second game of the event, taking on Southern Illinois at 4 p.m. (EST) on ESPNU. The winner will face Mississippi State or UC-Irvine Friday at 3 p.m. (EST) on ESPN2. All eight teams will have Saturday off before retuning to action on Sunday. The full tournament bracket is available online at www.GoMocs.com.
Ticket packages range from $15 to $75 and are available at www.ticketmaster.com or at the Anaheim Convention Center Box Office. Travel packages are available at www.GETTravel.com.
