ATLANTA, Ga. ? Junior setter Katherine Burrell produced a game-high 42 assists to go along with a team-high 18 kills as Fordham (2-0) posted a three-game sweep (34-32, 33-31, 31-29) over Chattanooga (0-1) Friday evening at the Georgia State Tournament in Atlanta, Ga. The match was the first of the season for the Lady Mocs and is their only action on the opening day of the tournament.
Despite it being the team's first contest of the season, Chattanooga battled in each game of the match, each time taking the Rams beyond 30 points. Game one saw the two teams play to within several points throughout the game before Fordham withstood two late game points and then scored the final three for the 34-32 victory.
Another strong effort in the second game brought the Lady Mocs to another game point before a pair of kills by Fordham sophomore Jolanda Gunning-Snowden and several key blocks locked up the 33-31 victory to put the Rams up 2-0 in the match. In game three, Chattanooga battled out to a 29-28 lead before freshman Christi Griffiths posted three consecutive kills to lead the Rams to a decisive 31-29 win, and a 3-0 match victory.
In addition to Burrell's career-high performance, Griffiths, sophomore Emilie Stewart and Gunning-Snowden each reached double-figures in kills for Fordham.
For the Lady Mocs, senior Leslee Ball (Sycamore, Ill.) led the attack with a match-high 16 kills and a .371 hitting percentage while senior setter Bethany Herndon (Fulshear, Texas) posted a team-high 41 assists. They were joined by senior outside hitter Kelsey Amundson (Houston, Texas) who registered a match-high 24 digs and added 10 kills. Junior Lara Newberry (Chattanooga, Tenn.) finished the day with 14 digs.
The Lady Mocs will return to action tomorrow morning when they face the host school, Georgia State University, at 11:30 a.m. and will wrap up the tournament with a 4 p.m. match with the University of Central Florida.
