GREENVILLE, S.C. --- Chattanooga (10-5/5-0) continued its winning ways with a 77-60 win at Furman (2-12/1-4) this afternoon in Timmons Arena. The win was the first over the Paladins foe Head Coach John Shulman.
“It was a great win for us,” said Shulman. “It keeps us undefeated in the league and showed us how to be successful on the road. Now we have to come back home this week and build on what we've started.”
The Mocs got off to a good start to opening the game on a 9-2 run before the Paladins closed to 11-8 on a Noah States basket with 15:33 left in the half. The Chattanooga defense tightened up and held Furman without a field goal for the next 7:23 going on a 17-2 run to make it 28-10, before settling in with a 45-34 halftime lead.
The Paladins battled throughout the second half closing to single digits three times before the Mocs resumed control each time. The final time was on a Justin Dehm three-pointer with 6:58 to play to make it 62-53.
The Mocs then went on a 13-3 run to put the game away. Once again the UTC defense spurred the run holding Furman with no field goals for the 5:54 run.
Junior guard Stephen McDowell led the Mocs again with 21 points hitting five threes on the day. Nicchaeus Doaks had 17 points, 12 in the second half. Marcus Watts, a native of nearby Clinton, scored 10 points to go with seven rebounds, four assists and two steals, while Khalil Hartwell tossed in 13.
Connor Nolte came off the bench to lead the Paladins with 13 points and five rebounds. Dehm added 12, all on three-pointers. The Mocs limited Furman to 28.8 percent (17-59) shooting from the floor.
Chattanooga returns to the McKenzie Arena Thursday, Jan. 10, hosting UNC Greensboro in a key North Division matchup at 7 p.m.
