BRENTWOOD, Tenn. --- The Chattanooga women's tennis team opened the spring season with a 6-1 win over Belmont Saturday evening at the Wildwood Swim and Tennis Club.

“It's exciting to start the season with a win, especially starting five freshman,” Lady Mocs Head Coach Jeff Clark said. “It's good to get a road win over a very good team.”

The Lady Mocs swept the doubles matches to gain the first point of the match. Jennemieke van der Veek and Beata Knizat won the first match 8-2 followed by the No. 3 duo Annie Green and Brianna Wishing who defeated Abby Hogan and Lauren Irick 8-2 as well. Shaina Singh and Emily Hangstefer made it a sweep with their 8-5 win over Whitnie Warren and Tatiana Pozo at No. 1.

The Bruins, returning four top players from last year's squad, claimed the first point in the singles matches as Abby Leatherwood scored a 6-0, 6-2 win over Chattanooga newcomer Charlotte Bossy at the No. 3 spot. Van der Veek quickly put the Lady Mocs on top with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Hogan at No. 4. Hangstefer gave UTC a 3-1 lead with her 6-4, 6-2 win over Pozo at the No. 2 spot and Knizat, the lone senior on the squad, clinched the win for Chattanooga with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Laura Stack at the No. 5 singles position.

Singh won her three-set match at No. 1 singles over Warren, 6-4, 6-7, 6-2 and Green won her match at No. 6 beating Irick 6-4, 7-5.

The Lady Mocs will open the home portion of its schedule on Saturday, Jan. 24 at the Hixson Racquet Club against UNC Asheville. The match is set to begin at 2 p.m. Admission to all UTC home tennis matches is free.
