CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The Chattanooga women's tennis team shutout UNC Asheville 7-0 Saturday afternoon in its home opener at the Hixson Racquet Club.

The Lady Mocs swept the doubles matches to claim the first point. Freshmen Shaina Singh and Emily Hangstefer finished first in doubles with an 8-3 win over Leslie Smith and Stephanie Schon. Senior Beata Knizat and freshman Jennemieke van der Veek posted an 8-6 win over Devon Cavanaugh and Louise Bottomley at No. 2 followed by sophomore Annie Green and freshman Brianna Wishing's tie-break win at No. 3. The duo posted a 9-8(5) win over Nicole Schon and Tess Darling.

“It was a great effort from top to bottom,” UTC head coach Jeff Clark said. “We got off to a good start by taking all three doubles matches. In singles we came out with good intensity.  I was proud of the girls for their  focus throughout the whole match.”

Knizat started out the singles matches with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Bottomley followed by Hangstefer's win at No. 2 over Cavanaugh, 6-3, 6-2 to put the Lady Mocs up 3-0. Green's 6-3, 6-1 win over Tania Mateva clinched the win for UTC. Freshman Charlotte Bossy got her first collegiate win defeating Stephanie Schon 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3. Shaina Singh pulled out a win at the top spot 6-4, 7-5 and van der Veek wrapped up the sweep with a 6-2, 6-4 win at the four spot.

The Lady Mocs improve to 2-0 and the Bulldogs (0-1) drop their season opener. Chattanooga will be on the road Sunday to take on the Alabama Crimson Tide. The match is slated to start at 2 p.m.
