BOONE, N.C. --- Chattanooga (15-15/11-8) overcame a 14-point second-half deficit, but it could not overcome Appalachian State (12-16/9-10) in Boone Thursday night falling 88-82 in the Holmes Center.  The loss spoiled a milestone night for Mocs graduate student Stephen McDowell.

McDowell scored his 1,000th-point as a Moc on a high floater in the lane (5:10 in the second half) and set a new single-season record for three-pointers made passing Keddric Mays' (2006-07) 118 by one.

The Mountaineers received a career-high 35 points from Donald Sims including nine three-pointers.  He and Kellen Brand combined to score 53 points on the evening as Brand tossed in 18, 14 in the first half.

The first half was all ASU as it took control late in the first half pushing to a 10-point lead at the break, 48-38.  It was the Sims and Brand show with 33 of App's 48 points.  UTC received inspired play in the first half from Jeremy Saffore and Jasper Williams with six and five points apiece.

A Donterious Hughes bucket at 16:50 gave App a 56-42 lead, it's largest at 14 points.  The Mocs had an answer.

An 18-4 run tied the score at 60 on a layup by Kevin Goffney at 11:18.  ASU regained the lead and maintained it until five unanswered points gave the Mocs a 76-75 lead at 4:35 on a 17-footer by McDowell.

Yet another Sims three-pointer at 3:52 put the Mountaineers back ahead 78-76.  The Mocs clawed back to tie the score 82-82 on a Nicchaeus Doaks free throw with 1:45 left.

That set up more Sims heroics.  With 57 seconds to play, Sims hit a three-pointer from about 27 feet out top to give ASU the lead for good leading to an 88-82 win.

The Mountaineers out-muscled Chattanooga winning the battle of the boards 42-26.  ASU hit 56.4 percent from the field as well compared to 45.9 percent for the Mocs.

McDowell led UTC with 16 points.  Khalil Hartwell and Keyron Sheard each tossed in 14 points, while Kevin Goffney added 13 points, five rebounds, three assists, two blocks and four steals.

Isaac Butts has 12 points and a game-high 10 boards for the Mountaineers with three blocks in just 16 minutes of play.  Hughes added 13 points, four rebounds and five assists.  Brand chipped in a game-high seven assists.

A couple of positives for the Mocs were just nine turnovers and making 10 steals.  The UTC bench out-scored its counterparts 17-3.

The Mocs close out the regular season Saturday at Western Carolina, game time scheduled for 7 p.m.  App State finishes its regular season hosting Samford at 3:30 p.m.
