Lady Mocs Upend Mountaineers to Advance to Second Round

LADY MOCS UPEND APPALACHIAN STATE AT SOCON TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS

ELON, N.C. --- The No. 9 seed Lady Mocs defeated No. 8 seed Appalachian State Thursday morning in the first round of the 2009 Southern Conference Women's Tennis Championships at the Burlington Tennis Center in Burlington, N.C., in a rematch of the regular season finale between the two teams.

Appalachian State, who won the match 4-3 on April 14 in Boone, N.C., claimed the first point Thursday winning two of the three doubles matches. Chattanooga freshman Emily Hangstefer and sophomore Grace Robinette won the No. 1 doubles match 8-3 but Appalachian State would rebound to win the final two to go up 1-0.

Lindsey King and Blakely Bean defeated UTC freshman Jennemieke van der Veek and sophomore Annie Green 8-2 at the No. 2 position while junior Kate Ksiezopolski and freshman Charlotte Bossy fell 8-5 at the No. 3 spot to Amanda Cash and Laura Janke.

In singles, the Lady Mocs charged back into the match winning the first three. Hangstefer posted a win at the top spot defeating Cash 6-3, 6-1 to tie the match. Freshman Brianna Wishing put Chattanooga up on top with a 6-2, 6-4 decision at the No. 5 spot over ASU's Heather Prior and Annie Green gave the Lady Mocs a 3-1 lead with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Bean at the No. 4 spot.

The Mountaineers cut the lead to 3-2 with a 6-3, 6-3 win by Caroline Mauch over Bossy at No. 3 but Chattanooga's van der Veek bounced back from a first set loss to clinch the win. She defeated King 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 2 position. Kate Ksiezopolski was leading 6-7, 6-2, 3-1 in the third set when the match was decided.

The Lady Mocs will take on SoCon regular season champion and top seeded Furman at 9 a.m. Friday at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center located on the Elon University campus. Live stats will be available at GoMocs.com.
