SPARTANBURG, S.C.---The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's basketball team dropped a 78-63 to Wofford (14-8/6-3) in Johnson Arena Monday night. The loss makes the Mocs 11-10 on the season, 3-5 in Southern Conference play.
Ty Patterson led the Mocs with 15 points and five rebounds on the night. Patterson is from nearby Anderson, S.C., which is within 30 minutes of Wofford.
The Terriers were paced by Noah Dahlman's game-high 20 points. Junior Salters added 14 points, while Terry Martin came off the bench to chip in 12 points and five boards.
It stayed pretty even throughout the first half. Wofford would take a lead and the Mocs would charge back. The Terriers led by as many as eight in the first and were up seven, 36-29, when UTC scored seven unanswered points to tie the game at 36 on a three-pointer by Patterson with 51 seconds left. Dahlman scored a layup with 21 seconds left to give the Terriers a 38-36 halftime lead.,
Both teams shot the ball well in the opening frame as Chattanooga made 59.1 percent (13-22) from the field, while the Terriers shot 57.1 percent (15-29). Ten Chattanooga turnovers were key as Wofford recorded 13 points off those 10 miscues.
A Patterson three-pointer closed an early second half six-point gap to 43-40 at 15:32. But the Mocs went without a field goal for 7:34 which the Terriers used to go on a 15-3 run. Dante Harvey stopped the run with a jumper in the paint to make it 61-48 with 7:58 to play.
The closest the Mocs would get it from there was 12 as the Terriers held tight down the stretch. Chattanooga shot just 32 percent (8-25) in the second half including just one-for-10 from three-point range.
Ricky Taylor added 13 points and three assists for UTC on the night. Jeremy Saffore came off the bench to score 11 points and grab four boards.
The Terriers out-rebounded the Mocs 32-30 for the game. They held a 21-13 advantage in the second half and out-scored UTC 36-22 in the paint and scored 17 points on their 11 offensive rebounds.
The highlight of the night for the Mocs was the first appearance this season of junior Troy Cage who subbed in with 2:31 left in the game. Cage had surgery to insert a rod in his leg to alleviate a stress fracture that kept him off the floor from the moment he came on campus in August.
The Mocs return home for two big SoCon North Division matchups with Western Carolina and Appalachian State. The Western Carolina game is Thursday night at 7 p.m., while the Mocs and Mountaineers square off Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
