CHARLESTON, S.C. - Seven kills by sophomore right side
Christina Teter (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) sparked a 25-22 victory in the third
set for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga volleyball team, but College
of Charleston won the match, 3-1 (25-16, 25-9, 22-25, 25-11) to end a
three-match winning streak for Chattanooga.
The Lady Mocs offense was paced by Teter with 10 kills and sophomore outside hitter Heather Parman (Ooletwah, Tenn.) tallied nine, while
junior middle blocker Ellie Kuhn (San Antonio, Texas) notched five. Seniors middle
blocker Courtney Barnes (Franklin, Tenn.) and right side Jessica Scott and
junior outside hitter Meagan Ernd (Munster, Ind.) each notched four kills.
Setting up the attack was senior Bailee Chastain
(Chattanooga, Tenn.) starting the match with 13 assist through two sets, but freshman
Tess Kosycarz (Temecula, Calif.) helped Chattanooga to its third set win recording 18 in the final
two frames.
Chattanooga (8-16, 3-5 SoCon) out dug its competition
recording 36 digs paced by sophomore libero Paula Passmore (Merrit Island, Fla.)
with a match-high 12. Four Lady Mocs, Parman, Scott, Chastain and
sophomore outside Kirsten Beasley (Amarillo, Texas) posted atleast five digs
during the match.
On the blocking front, Barnes led the Lady Mocs with three
and Scott added two as the team notched five blocks.
Throughout the match, College of Charleston (18-5, 7-1
SoCon) was efficient in the match posting a .345 attacking percentage, only
committing 10 mistakes. The Lady Mocs were hindered by 33 errors, 16 of those were blocks, and racked up
a 28 of their 40 kills in the first and third sets.
Starting with a 6-2 lead in the first set was the College of
Charleston, but Chattanooga would rally to come within one at 8-7 on two kills
by Parman and a service ace from junior Dakota Davis (Cleveland, Tenn.). After a
kill by Scott, the Cougars would tally a 9-3 run and eventually extend the lead
to 23-13. The Lady Mocs would take the next two points on kills by Kuhn before
College of Charleston closed the set at 25-16.
Chattanooga notched 13 kills on just four mistakes for a
.321 hitting percentage in the first set, but were unable to stop the College
of Charleston attack that posted 14 on one mistake.
The second set began with a Cougar's 13-1 rally as they cruised
to a 25-9 victory and took a 2-0 lead in the match.
After the intermission, Chattanooga started the first set on
a 6-2 run assisted by two kills from Teter and a change at setter in Kosycarz.
College of Charleston scored on the next three rallies, but the Lady Mocs were
able to keep their advantage on a kill by Teter and block by Barnes and Parman.
A kill by Scott stretched the lead to three, 10-7.
College of Charleston forced a Chattanooga timeout after
scoring on three-straight points, 13-12. Kills by Teter (2), Barnes and Scott
helped the Lady Mocs build a 17-14 advantage. Then, the Cougars tied the set at
17, 18 and 19 before taking their first lead of the set at 21-19.
Consecutive kills by Parman and Teter knotted the set at 21
and 22 before a three-point run that saw the Cougars make three mistakes to
provide the Lady Mocs with a 25-22 victory. Chattanooga registered a match-high
15 kills in the set as a couple of offensive changes ignited the attack. Five
of the six tie scores and both lead changes in the match occurred in the frame.
In the fourth set, College of Charleston showed why it is
leading the conference rolling out to a 9-1 advantage on way to a 25-11
match-clinching victory.
The Lady Mocs are back in action at Maclellan Gym on
Saturday hosting Wofford at 2 p.m. and return to the court the following afternoon
against Furman.
