Chattanooga Claims 78-73 Win Over Davidson in Home Finale

| By:

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.---On senior night at McKenzie Arena Monday night, the Chattanooga men's basketball team's lone senior, Ty Patterson, combined with Ricky Taylor to score 42 points and lead the Mocs to a 78-73 win over Davidson.  The Mocs improve to 14-15 and 6-10 in the Southern Conference North Division with the win, while Davidson falls to 14-14 and 9-7 in the South.

Taylor had a game-high and tied a personal career-high with 22 points. Patterson scored 20 and led all players with eight rebounds. Keegan Bell added 16, six assists and five rebounds for the Mocs.

Jake Cohen led the Wildcats with 16 points and seven rebounds, while Brendan McKillop went 5-11 from the three-point line for 15. Nik Cochran had 13 and Will Archambault had 10 points off the bench for the Wildcats.

After Davidson's Steve Rossiter scored the first two points of the game, Patterson and Taylor each hit a three to spark a 19-4 run to put the Mocs up early. UTC started the game 6-7 from the field with a combination of strong drives and hot shooting from behind the arc.

Ridge McKeither's dunk capped the run at the 13:52 mark, giving the Mocs a 19-6 lead at that point.  For the next 4:30, however, Chattanooga scored only two points as Davidson chipped away.

Five straight threes over a four-minute stretch gave the Wildcats a 15-2 run and their first lead since the 18:20 mark. McKillop hit three from deep during that stretch for all nine of his first half points. The run made it a 28-23 advantage for the Wildcats, and they took a 35-32 lead into the break. Cochran was 4-4 from the field in the first and 2-2 from behind the arc to lead Davidson with 10 at the break.

Chattanooga's strong start turned into 41.9 percent shooting from the field and 3-11 from behind the three-point line in the first. Davidson shot 50 percent in both categories.

Just like the first half, the Mocs started the second 2-2 from long range and grabbed the lead, 40-38.  The teams traded baskets over the next seven minutes, while neither team led by more than two.

An offensive rebound and put-back from Jake Cohen gave Davidson a four-point advantage, 49-45, with 10:46 to play, but that only spurred a Chattanooga run.

The Mocs went 3-4 from the field and 6-6 from the free-throw line during a 16-3 run that put them ahead 61-52 with just under 6:30 to play.  Taylor and Patterson scored six apiece during the run as two Taylor free tosses gave the Mocs the lead for good, 54-52, with 7:56 left.

Chattanooga went 18-27 from the free-throw line in the game and 15-23 in the second half. Davidson made only five free throws and got to the line only ten times on the night.

A three-pointer from the right wing by Patterson highlighted a short 6-0 run that gave the Mocs a double-digit lead, 73-60, at the 3:53 mark.  Over one eight-minute stretch in the second half, Taylor and Patterson scored 25 of the Mocs' 29 points.

Two late threes from Davidson made the score close, but the Wildcats did not have enough firepower in the second half.  Patterson was pulled from the game with 11 seconds remaining and received his final standing ovation from the crowd at McKenzie Arena.

Chattanooga out-rebounded Davidson, who ranks second in the league in rebounding margin, 41-38 on the night.  The Mocs' wings were pivotal with 22 of the 41 boards led by Patterson's eight and Bell's five.

The Mocs finish the regular season with a trip to SoCon North leading Appalachian State Thursday then the finale at Western Carolina on Saturday. The Appalachian State game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
