Postgame Quotes
Chattanooga 4, Appalachian State 2 (10 innings.)
Sywassink/Lloyd Family Stadium
Boone, N.C
Head Coach Frank Reed
On three-straight pinch hitters:
"Della had a big walk that gave us an opportunity. I figured that we could not have done any worse because I felt like we have not been hitting the ball well in the original lineup. We gave some other kids a chance to see if they could swing. Obviously, we went with kids that could tie it up with one swing or a base hit. That was what Eason did and it was big giving us a chance to get back in it. Anytime that you are trying to play catch up ball in extra innings and you find a way to win, it is really remarkable."
On the defense by Appalachian State:
"I was thinking that we were not going to get a break because we had several really hit balls all through the weekend. We hit line shots and they seemed to be in the right spots, Lyndsey had one, I think Tia Blosser had another. As much as you have to be ready to play the game, you have to have a little bit of luck on your side too. I do not think we got a break until we got into the later innings."
On the passed ball in the 10th inning:
"If you think back, we had a passed ball yesterday that cost us and put us in a bad situation. You can see how important it is for our pitchers to hit their spots and the catchers to be able to keep the ball in front of them. We did not get a break until late, fortunately, we did. If we did not get that break there might have been a different outcome."
On loading the bases and scoring two runs without a hit:
"When you have the bases loaded, you do not have anything else to do, but go for the runner at the plate. Fortunately, Tydingco had a great jump off the batted ball. Kasey has been doing an excellent job for us, not only in the lineup, but as a base runner earlier in her career. We have a lot of confidence in her too."
On Kandice Irwin's performance:
"We have seen her confidence grow in each outing. She has relished that role. We actually came together and had two mini coaches meetings. I was leaning towards starting her. I was just worried about who would come in relief after her. After we got through X amount of innings, I knew that we were going to go right back to her. She has been a work horse for us."
On the offensive struggles:
"I think that we made some pretty good adjustments to help get us going. We need something to happen for us to start that snowballing effect. Where, you have gotten a big hit and the hit behind that is always squashed by hitting the ball hard at somebody."
"You have a tendency to feel like you are never going to get a break and your momentum falls off. I guess the best thing to say is that they did not give up. They thought that they could win the whole time especially after getting those two runs."
Brittany Eason
On coming through with a two RBI single in the sixth
"It felt like every other at bat even though I was a pinch hitter. We were down by two and had to score the runs that were on base. I was able to put the ball in play and score the two runs that tied the game."
