ELON, N.C. - The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga volleyball team started slow on Sunday afternoon at Jordan Gym and fell in straight sets to Elon, 3-0 (25-12, 25-14, 25-22).

The Lady Mocs offense with led by senior middle blocker Courtney Barnes (Franklin, Tenn.) with seven kills and hitting .375 only committing one mistake. Freshman outside Jennifer Kuroski (Acworth, Ga.) and sophomore right side Christina Teter (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) each totaled six kills for the Lady Mocs.

“We struggled today and our youth showed,” said associate head coach James Onikeku. “When, we did a good look for a kill after an accurate pass from our back row and a good set, then we just were unable to get the ball down. Elon played well defensively, which caused some frustration for us at times. We just have to learn to move on, forget about what happened on your last swing, and battle for the next point.”

Junior middle blocker Ellie Kuhn (San Antonio, Texas) only registered two kills, offensively, but was a force at the net blocking down a total of six attacks with two of them being solo. Adding four assisted blocks was Teter, while Barnes notched two as Chattanooga recorded eight team blocks to lead the match.

Also contributing defensively was sophomore libero Paula Passmore (Merritt Island, Fla.) with a match-high 17 digs and Kuroski, who added seven.

In the first set, the Phoenix started off strong taking a 9-2 lead and did not look back in taking an early lead in the match, 25-12.

The Lady Mocs fought in the second set as a kill by Teter brought the visitors within one at 9-8, but a 10-2 run by Elon to conclude the set, 25-4, gave it a 2-0 advantage.

As the Phoenix jumped out to another early lead in the third set at 9-3, the Lady Mocs continued to show their resiliency as a kill by Kuroski brought them to within three, 10-7.

A four-point rally capped by a block from sophomore outside Kirsten Beasley (Amarillo, Texas) and Kuhn cut the deficeit to one at 22-21. Following a kill by Teter to keep Chattanooga within striking distance, 23-22, Elon ended the threat scoring on the next two rallies for the victory.

The Lady Mocs return to court on Saturday at 6 p.m. when they travel to Georgia Southern on Saturday. Chattanooga concludes its non-conference slate against Savannah State on Oct. 3 at 5 p.m.

Opening SoCon action on Oct. 6 at Maclellan Gym, the Lady Mocs host Samford in their Dig Pink and camp reunion match before hosting Appalachian State and Western Carolina on Oct. 9-10.
