LAWRENCE, Kan. – After sending Arkansas to five sets earlier on Friday, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga volleyball team was back in action later in the day and fell in straight sets to Akron, 3-0 (13-25, 21-25, 22-25). Sophomore libero Paula Passmore (Merritt Island, Fla.) paced the match for the fifth time this season with 16 digs.
For the first time during the campaign, freshman setter Tess Kosycarz (Temecula, Calif.) saw a majority of the action on the court recording 15 assists, while senior Bailee Chastain (Chattanooga, Tenn.) added 10.
Leading the Chattanooga (0-5) offensive attack was senior middle blocker Courtney Barnes (Franklin, Tenn.) with eight kills, while junior middle blocker Ellie Kuhn (San Antonio, Texas) and sophomore Meagan Ernd (Munster, Ind.) each had five.
The Lady Mocs played more consistently as the match progressed, but were unable to take a set from Akron (3-2). The Zips were tough from the service line and recorded 13 aces during the match.
In the first set, Akron rolled out to a 7-0 lead and never looked back in taking the set, 25-13. The Lady Mocs were their own enemy committing nine errors and surrendering five aces to the Zips. Ernd and Barnes each recorded four kills.
After the Lady Mocs had a 7-6 advantage in the second set on a kill by Ernd, Akron scored on the next six rallies. Chattanooga fell behind as far as 17-10 before scoring four-straight times to cut the deficit to three on a kill by Barnes. The Lady Mocs cut the score to two, 23-21, late in the set following a block from sophomore Christina Teter (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) and Kuhn, but the effort was not enough as the Zips took a 2-0 advantage in the match, 25-21.
With its back against the wall, Chattanooga came out fighting in the third set scoring on the first three points and took a 5-1 lead. A rally from the Zips pulled them to within one at 9-8 after scoring on four-of-five rallies. The teams traded points as Akron knotted the score at 11, but Chattanooga responded with two kills from Barnes and another by Chastain before the Zips called time, 14-11.
Following a kill by Kuhn, Chattanooga was the first to 20 and held a three point lead. The Zips took the lead for the first time in the set at 21-20 following a trio of aces. Chattanooga responded with a kill from Parman, but the Zips remained in control at 22-21. The Lady Mocs only recorded a kill by Barnes before Akron closed out the match with a 25-22 win.
Akron's Morgan Kuhn registered eight service aces and 28 assists during the match, while Courtney Jarvis led the team with 10 kills.
Chattanooga returns to the court at the Jayhawk Classic on Saturday at 2 p.m. facing Kansas. Then, the squad plays its first mid-week game at Belmont on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
After a tournament at North Florida, the Lady Mocs open the home portion of the schedule on Sept. 17 against Belmont at 7 p.m. The match is a part of the two-day Country Inns & Suites Invitational that concludes the following day with a doubleheader against UCF and James Madison beginning at 11:30 a.m.
