SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Chattanooga Mocs volleyball team
dropped a 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 26-24), decision to Wofford (12-6, 1-2 SoCon) on
Saturday night at Benjamin Johnson Arena. Junior middle blocker Christina Teter
(Signal Mountain, Tenn.) registered a match-high 15 kills and .345 hitting pct.,
for the Mocs (2-15, 0-3 SoCon), while freshman outside Jennifer Kuroski
(Acworth, Ga.) added 12 kills.
"This match was different than some of the others we have played because we did not have opportunities to close out a set at the end," said head coach Travis Filar. "We did fight back to make it close at the end in every single set."
As a team, Chattanooga led the match in a number of
categories including kills (45), assists (41) and digs (50).
Adding to the Mocs offensive effort was freshman outside
Kasey Talley (Boiling Spring, S.C.) with eight kills. Sophomore setter Tess
Kosycarz (Temecula, Calif.) ran the Mocs offense totaling a match-best 33
assists.
Defensively, junior libero Paula Passmore (Merritt Island,
Fla.) recorded 18 digs for Chattanooga, while freshman defensive specialist Melissa Green (Merritt Island, Fla.) contributed nine. Six were
added by Kosycarz and sophomore Andrea Johnson (Soddy Daisy, Tenn.).
Registering four blocks including two solo was Teter, while
Talley contributed two blocks.
The Terriers were led by Arden Anderson with 12 kills, while Bekah Dorsey tallied 33 assists. Reagan Styles posted a match-high 19 digs.
Wofford took control of the first set scoring eight-straight
points on the strong serving of Dorsey. The Mocs did mount a comeback
coming within three late in the frame at 21-18 on a kill by Talley before the
Terriers closed it out 25-22. Chattanooga did score on five-straight set
points.
Each team made seven mistakes during the frame, but
Chattanooga notched 12 kills, one more than their opponent for a .161 pct.
With the score tied at eight in the second set, Chattanooga
scored three-straight points to take an 11-8 lead aided by kills from Talley
and Blackstock and a service ace from Passmore. Wofford called timeout and
responded with a 5-1 run to take the lead, 13-12.
The Terriers stretched their lead to four, 21-17, before
Chattanooga used kills from Talley and Teter along with a block by Teter to cut
the deficit to one, 21-20. Trailing 22-21, the Mocs committed two service
errors assisting the Terriers to a 25-23 victory and 2-0 lead in the match.
Both squads totaled 15 kills with
Chattanooga making one more mistake in a frame that saw nine ties and five lead
changes. Teter registered five kills for the Mocs.
Following the intermission, the Mocs fell behind 16-7
causing a timeout called by head coach Travis Filar. Chattanooga responded with a 10-2
run to come within one as Johnson and Green provided a tough service. During
the stretch, Kuroski recorded three kills, while Teter had two and Kosycarz had
one.
"At that point, we had nothing to lose," said Filar. "We have been stressing during practices that we can't allow ourselves to get in those situations. We have to fight hard from the beginning."
A block by Teter and Blackstock tied the score at 22. The
Mocs did not take the lead, but knotted the score at 23 and 24 before the
Terriers closed out the set and match, 26-24.
During the frame, Chattanooga totaled a .277 attacking pct.
and 18 kills, but the only mistakes made by the Terriers were by two blocks by
the Mocs. Kuroski put away six attacks, while Teter added six.
The Mocs return to action on Wednesday with the Southern
Rail Rivalry at Samford at 7 p.m. (E.D.T.). Chattanooga begins a four-match
home stand on Oct. 8 against UNCG at 7 p.m. at Maclellan Gym.
