Softball Postgame Quotes
Chattanooga 9, Campbell 7; No. 1 Georgia 4, Chattanogoa 3
Athens, Gal - Jack Turner Stadium
March 6, 2011
Head Coach Frank Reed
On the Campbell:
"It has been a long weekend here in Athens. We laid around in a hotel room all day yesterday waiting on the rain. It really makes it tough and I have to give the kids credit that they came out today ready to play. We scored some runs early, but got a little complacent and let them get back into the game. Fortunately, we came back with a big hit in the second inning of the international tie breaker and won the game. It was alright, but I think that we might have been looking a little ahead towards Georgia.
On Georgia:
"Fuzzard comes out and pitches an awesome game for us there. Realistically, we should not have lost. A fly ball that was missed in right would have made it two outs and we probably would have won the ball game, 3-2. I think that it gives you an indication of how far these girls have come. You hate the loss, but if you have to loss it then I guess it is best to lose it now. These are the types of teams that we will hopefully play in the regionals. I think that we have proven that we could play with them. Everybody has their day and anybody can come out flat for a day. The scoreboard doesn't show that we won, but as far as the program goes and the progress that we have made, I think that we are a winner."
On Lyndsey Stiles in the first game:
"She had been struggling a little bit with consistency and I think that she found that this afternoon. It was a good outing for Stiles and hopefully that will set the table for the rest of the year."
"Obviously, she has the speed to get herself to second. We will help her a little bit [with sac bunts]. It does not hurt to have Michelle Fuzzard, Tiffany Baker and Kasey Tydingco behind her. Somebody is going to find a way to score her. We did that today. It is a good combination and we are going deep in our lineup with good hitters. She sort of sparks our offense, when she gets on first."
On Tiffany Baker against Campbell:
"Tiffany is another one that has been up and down with her injuries. We finally found something that has kept her a little bit pain free going into games. I think that is going to be a big key for her. Hopefully, we can keep her pretty much pain free, so that she is not changing something to try and compensate or over compensate. Today was a proven fact that if we can keep her that way then that is going to be big for us as a team.
On Nikki Waters' six strikeouts in the first game:
"Nikki is starting to find a little bit of consistency and threw an awesome game. She gave up a couple of hits there in the sixth and Kandice [Irwin] has been our closer all year. We thought that we could put her in there close it out, shut them down and get on to our next game. Obviously that did not happen, I don't know if she was a little bit flat or was missing her spots. We had to bring Fuz in to finish it off. Nikki deserved the win and pitched well enough. She is the type of player that it doesn't matter if the win goes in her column or not. She is a team player all the way anyway. It is good to see her starting to pick it up going into conference play."
On picking up the win with two outs in the top of the ninth:
"It was looking pretty tough. If we did not score, then we probably lose that game. We had the right people up and Poteat could not move Stiles over to third. Fuzzard hits a line shot that gets caught, but she would have been able to score if we would have been able to move her. It was a last ditch effort for Baker to hit that home run because it is tough to keep the home team off the scoreboard."
On riding the momentum from Baker's home run to Georgia:
"It was a whole different ballgame when you compare Campbell to Georgia. Obviously, you don't need anything to motivate you going out to play a good team. It was what we set out to do when we made the schedule. You want to go out and play good teams, which is what we are trying to do now and have done in the past. Those are the types of teams that we are going to have to play. There is not better time than now to get that feeling of what it is like to play that kind of team under pressure, so that you can see where you are come tournament time."
On taking an early lead by scoring two runs on a mistake by No. 1 Georgia:
"Obviously, it was big. They obviously made a throwing error. One thing that we did was put it in play and tested them in a tough situation. They could not make the play as the pitcher hurried the throw. I never felt like we gave anything up with the way Fuzzard pitched as she gave up only six hits to a really good hitting ball team.
On the Baker home run:
"It was a shot that went well over their scoreboard that was 215-220' part of the field. She hit it another 50 or 60 feet higher and cleared the scoreboard out into a big field. It was pretty cool for Baker. She definitely got it all when she swung."
On chasing Morgan Montemeyer in 2.1 innings:
"She is a good little pitcher. Honestly after we started settling in and put the ball in play. We had some more opportunities score, but it just did not happen. It is an adjustment. We had to make an adjustment from the four pitchers that we saw in the Campbell game. One was throwing change ups at about 40 mph every pitch. We had to do that and adjust back to kids that are pitching a little bit faster. We did a good job hitting the first pitcher from Georgia. Our kids did a good job of putting the ball in play even against the second pitcher. The ball just did not fall for us. Lauren Flores hit a shot down the third base line that literally if the kid did not get her glove up. She probably would not have played the rest of the year. We put balls in play. It was not like we had an extreme amount of strike outs. We put the ball in play against a good pitcher. I thought that was a good sign for our offense going forward."
On the seventh inning against Georgia:
"I am disappointed obviously. We can spin it to a positive, but the bottom line is this that I think this program is ready to make a big jump and be able to beat teams like that. I think that today the team proved that as far as our coaching staff believes that we are not far from making that jump. I am not going to tell you that we are going to be perfect everyday out. The team that can go in there and play that well today is poised to something special."
