CULLOWHEE, N.C. - The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga
softball team powered its way with 32 hits in a doubleheader sweep of Western Carolina,
12-4 and 13-0, at the Catamount Softball Complex on Saturday. Junior shortstop
Jessica Traxler (Chino Hills, Calif.) blasted a grand slam in the seventh of
game one.
Junior pitcher and designated player Michelle Fuzzard
(Huntington Beach, Calif.) went 6-for-8 in the twinbill with a home run and eight RBI. The
round tripper was the 25th career for the Fuzzard putting her in a tie for second on the Lady Mocs all-time
list.
Chattanooga improved to 37-12 overall and 19-3 in the Southern
Conference, tying its league-best win total from last season. Western Carolina
dropped to 18-33 and 3-20 in league play.
Notching the victories in the circle were seniors Kandice
Irwin (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Nikki Waters (Soddy Daisy, Tenn.) as each improved
to 11-3 and 10-3, respectively, on the season. Waters had a no-hit bid broken
up with two outs in the fourth of game two.
Fuzzard broke the Lady Mocs single-season RBI record in the
first and extended it to 62 before the doubleheader was complete. Senior third
baseman Tiffany Baker (East Ridge, Tenn.) added one RBI in game one to tie
Fuzzard at the time at 56. Angela Brewer held the previous mark with 55 in
2002.
Another record that fell was the stolen base mark as senior
Lyndsey Stiles (Hixson, Tenn.) over took former Lady Moc Jeannie Cochrane with
her 32nd of the year in game two.
The Lady Mocs finish the regular season at Western Carolina
on Sunday at 1 p.m., before heading to Statesboro, Ga., for the SoCon
Tournament that begins on Wednesday at 2 p.m., for Chattanooga. Links for live

Game One: CHATTANOOGA 14, Western Carolina 4
Chattanooga started off its final SoCon series of the season
with a 12-4 victory. Traxler connected
on the third grand slam of the season for Chattanooga in the seventh.
Sophomore Sara Poteat (Thomaston, Ga.) and
Fuzzard registered three base knocks, while
Stiles and senior left fielder Lauren Flores (Ft. Oglethorpe, Ga.)
added two each. Junior caters Vivian Morimoto (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Traxler each recorded four RBI.
In the circle, senior Kandice Irwin (Knoxville, Tenn.) notched
the relief victory to improve her season mark to 11-3, while tossing 4.1
innings and striking out three. Fuzzard started the contest, lasting 2.2 frames
and yielding four earned runs.
The Lady Mocs started off on the right foot as Stiles doubled over the head of the left fielder. Following Poteat being hit by a pitch for the 12th time
this season, Fuzzard went with the pitch and delivered a single down the right
field line for her 55th RBI of the season giving Chattanooga a 1-0 lead. The
RBI tied Baker for the UTC
single-season record.
A one-out walk to senior right fielder Della Harrison
(Nashville, Tenn.) allowed her to steal her seventh base of the season. The inning
was kept alive on an error by the shortstop as Flores reached first. Stiles
sent a shot to straight-away center, but center fielder Erin Foster was able to
stretch out approaching the warning track to make the catch and keep it a
one-run game.
The third frame started as Poteat beat out an infield-bunt single
to third and stole her 12th base of the year. She took third on a deep fly out
to center from Baker and Morimoto drove her home with a seeing-eye single past
the shortstop putting the Lady Mocs back up 2-1.
Another single back up the middle by Tydingco put the Lady
Mocs in business and Harrison loaded the bases as a liner popped out of the shortstop's glove. The Catamounts were able to get out of the frame on a fielder's
choice to third base.
In the bottom-half, Fuzzard caught a lined shot in the circle
for the first out of the inning. Back-to-back singles provided runners in
scoring position with one out. Following a fielder's choice, Amber Steinhardt
doubled down the left field line tying the contest at two.
After head coach Frank Reed went to reliever Irwin, she was
met by Erin Foster, who tripled down the right field line as Western took its
first lead of the game, 4-2.
It took no time for the Lady Mocs to retie the game at four
as Stiles led off with a single to left center and Poteat beat out her second
infield-bunt single of the day to put two runners on for the heart of the
order.
The first player to break the UTC single-season RBI record
was Fuzzard, who singled through the left side for her 56th of the year. Fuzzard's
stay all alone at the top lasted one pitch as Baker drilled the first pitch she
saw into center field to tied the contest at four.
With two runners on base including pinch runner Layne Rainey
(Clarksville, Tenn.), Morimoto drove a 1-0 pitch deep over the fence in right
center as the Lady Mocs took a 7-4 lead. It was the fifth home run of the
season for the Sao Paulo, Brazil native.
Starting off the fifth was Flores legging out a high chopper
to short. The Ft. Oglethorpe, Ga., native moved up on a fielder's choice and
Poteat singled to first beating the fielder to the bag. Fuzzard over took the
single-season RBI mark with a single off the fence in right as Chattanooga
extended its lead to 8-4.
Receiving an opportunity to begin the fifth was freshman Stephanie
Rieck (Chandler, Ariz), who stayed in to play first, drawing a pinch hit walk.
Flores delivered a two-out single through the left side to move a Rieck into
scoring position. A wild pitch allowed both runners to move up 60 feet. The
Lady Mocs could not tack on a few more runs as they left the bases loaded.
With one out in the seventh, Baker drew a walk and Morimoto
singled through the right side. After a long battle leading to a walk to
Harrison, Traxler connected on a grand slam to left extending the Lady Mocs
lead to 12-4. It was her fifth blast of the season for Chattanooga.
The Catamounts were led offensively by Steinhardt, who
notched two of the team's seven on the day. Griffin paced the squad with two
RBI.
Hurler Katie King was charged with the loss to fall to 8-16
on the year and fanned two, while Bekah Burnett completed the game with 3.2
innings pitched.
Game Two: CHATTANOOGA
13, Western Carolina 0 (5 inn.)
The Lady Mocs jumped all over Western Carolina from the start
en route to a 13-0 victory following five innings of action as Waters tossed a one-hitter.
Fuzzard went 3-for-3 with five RBI in the contest including a solo shot in the
first.
Waters was impressive in the circle keeping the Catamounts
in check with four strikeouts and yielding one hit.
Recording multiple hits were Stiles, Poteat, Morimoto and
Harrison, while Martin, Stiles and Poteat also
drove in two runs.
With two outs in the first, Fuzzard lined a shot to center
that went off the top of the yellow barrier on the fence and over for her 12th
round tripper of the year. It was the 25th of her career moving her into a tie
for second with Melissa Ramirez (2002-05) and Laci Upchurch (2006-10) in the
all-time record books.
The Lady Mocs took advantage of a two-out fielding miscue in
the second inning allowing Flores to reach second base. Stiles then singled up
the middle driving in Flores and Poteat reached first on a bunt single to the
pitcher. Delivering her 59th RBI of the season was Fuzzard driving a pitch
through the hole on the right side extending the Chattanooga lead to 3-0.
After two walks to the Catamounts in the second, Waters
settled down by fanning two hitters and recording the final out on a fly to
right center.
The third began as Morimoto reached base and advanced to
second on a throwing error by the shortstop. Rieck singled on a bunt attempt,
but was out trying to advance to second. A Harrison single up the middle added
to the Chattanooga advantage, 4-0.
Following a Traxler walk and fielder's choice, Stiles drew a
walk to load the bases. Another walk was issued to Poteat forcing in a run.
Making the Catamounts pay for extending the inning was Fuzzard, who cleared the
bases with a double into the right center field gap, 8-0.
Defensively, Traxler ended the frame by covering a lot of
ground and making a catch down the left field line in foul territory. Morimoto
also caught a foul pop up against the netting on the third base side.
Three-straight singles started off the fourth for
Chattanooga by Morimoto, Rieck and Harrison. With one out, junior pinch hitter
Jenni Martin (East Ridge, Tenn.) delivered a double to left center as two runs
came across to score, 10-0. Stiles drove in another run on a single to center.
Poteat legged out a single to short as the fielder overthrew
first, allowing two runs to score. She then took second and grabbed third on a
mental miscue by the Catamount defense.
In the fourth with two outs, Steinhardt from Western
Carolina broke up the no-hit bid by Waters with a single that landed just in front
of Flores down the left field line. Defensive replacements were made by
Chattanooga as freshman Kaiti Dutton (Tulsa, Okla) took over in right and freshman Natalie Powers
(Gleenpool, Okla.) entered the game behind the plate.
As Coach Reed gave his reserves an opportunity to hit in the
fifth, freshman Chelsea Watson (Rhea County, Tenn.) notched her first collegiate
hit on a single up the middle. Dutton added a hit earlier in the frame and
moved to third on the Watson single.
The contest ended in the fifth with Sara Poteat sliding into
the hole backhanded the ball and tossed it over to first.
A trio of pitchers were used by the Catamounts including
Steinhardt, King and Bekah Burkett. Burkett and King each notched a strikeout.l
