Mocs Football Season Outlook - Offensive Line

Mocs Football Season Outlook - Offensive Line

| By:

We have passed the halfway mark for training camp and the Mocs are starting to eye the Sept. 3 season-opener at Nebraska.  Chattanooga is also preparing for its second scrimmage at the First Tennessee Meet the Mocs on Saturday.

The entire team is hard at work, but today's focus lies on the offensive line.  There are some big holes to fill, thanks to the loss of three starters to graduation.  Among that group, former left tackle Chris Harr is currently in the NFL with the Kansas City Chiefs.

UTC will also miss senior right guard T.J. Hurless, a second-team All-Southern Conference selection, and senior center Justin Galyon, a three-year starter.

"They are a work in progress," stated head coach Russ Huesman.  "We see signs every day that they are getting better.  We popped some runs today, but they are hit and miss and that is what you get with young guys.  One day they look great, and the next, not so great.  They are hard workers and Coach Wade is going to have them ready."

Despite the losses, Chattanooga still has plenty of talent up front.  Junior Adam Miller (6-4, 275 - Cohutta, Ga.) is a preseason All-SoCon pick, returning to his starting role at right tackle.  Fellow junior Austin Wilson (6-3, 265 - Dacula, Ga.) started at both guard and center last year, and will also be in the starting lineup.  Below is an updated depth chart that could easily change between now and the trip to Nebraska.

"So far in camp, we have had to pretty much start over from last year," stated Miller.  "That is not a problem.  We are coming together and starting to click as a unit.  We are going to be a very physical offensive line."

Sophomore Kevin Revis (6-2, 275 - Dayton, Tenn.) is looking to make an impact after transferring from Tennessee.  He is currently working with the first group at right guard.

Revis is learning a new offense, but is starting to hit his stride.  "I am not as far along as I would like to be, but I think I am getting more comfortable each day.  There is a lot to learn between the technique and the terminology, but it is coming on more natually now."

A pair of redshirt freshmen are also in the first group.  Taylor Dodds (6-6, 265 - Columbus, Ga.) almost saw action last season as a true freshman, but had a shoulder injury midway through the year that kept him out of the lineup.  He is back at 100% and ready for a strong season at left tackle.  Patrick Sutton  (6-1, 255 - Sevierville, Tenn.) sat out last year as a walk-on, but has climbed the depth chart at center with an impressive camp.

Senior Omre Harris (6-2, 290 - Atlanta, Ga.) has 12 starts at left guard in his career.  He has been out of action with a foot injury, but will be in the mix when he returns.  If he is healthy, Wilson could switch to center where he played a number of snaps last season.

Junior Will Hewitt (6-4, 280 - Sevierville, Tenn.) is another experienced guard in the second group.  He has three career starts under his belt and will back up Revis on the right side.  Sophomore Hunter Dockery (6-5, 290 - Newport, Tenn.) played in the last nine games of last season and is currently the No. 2 right tackle.

True freshmen Brandon Morgan (6-2, 280 - Hoover, Ala.) and Shaun Hill (6-2, 255 - Bethlehem, Ga.) are also in the second group.  Morgan is a two-time All-State player in Alabama and will push for a spot at left tackle.  Hill was the first prep player to enroll early at UTC.  He joined the team in January and is competing for time at center.

Sophomores Steven Nease (6-1, 260 - Greeneville, Tenn.) and Irvin Hernandez (5-11, 275 - Greeneville, Tenn.) lead the third group.  Things can switch quickly with this line of the depth chart, depending on how each is performing.  Nease is listed at left guard and Hernandez at center.  They both have changed positions throughout camp.

Also joining the third group are freshmen Devin Caldwell (6-5, 250 - Chattanooga, Tenn.), Anthony Boston (6-2, 295 - Lilburn, Ga.) and Synjen Herren (6-4, 290 - Dalton, Ga.).  Caldwell redshirted last season and is competing at right tackle.  Boston and Herren are both true freshmen and likely to redshirt.  Boston is listed at left tackle while Herren is competing at guard.

"We have a long way to go, but I think we are going to be athletic," stated offensive line coach Geep Wade.  "We are not big-body strong, but we can run.  We can not waste a day of camp.  Fundamentals are going to be very important for use over these next two weeks."
