BOONE, N.C. - The Chattanooga Mocs volleyball team fell to
Appalachian State in straight sets, 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-13) on Saturday
afternoon in straight-sets at the Holmes Center in Boone, N.C. Sophomore
outside Jennifer Kuroski (Aworth, Ga.) led the Mocs offensive effort with 13
kills.
"After the way that we lost on Saturday, I was not sure how
we would come out against a very good Appalachian State team," said head coach Travis Filar. "I
liked the way we fought and that we went point-for-point with them in the first
two set. If we made a couple less errors and dug and passed a few more balls,
then we could have gone into the break tied at one."
A trio of Mocs in freshman outsides Kasey Talley (Boiling
Spring, S.C.) and Jessi Blackstock (Killen, Ala.) and junior middle blocker Christina Teter (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) registered five kills each.
Sophomore setter Bridget Camacho (Cumming, Ga.) ran the
offense in the first frame totaling 10 assists before classmate Tess Kosycarz
finished the match registering 16.
"This was definitely a disappointing way to start out in
conference play," said Filar. "We have been talking all week
that it is the most important part of our season. I felt that the preseason
schedule in how we played and trained would prepare us for our conference."
The defense was paced by junior libero Paula Passmore
(Merritt Island, Fla.) with 11 digs, while freshman defensive specialist
Melissa Green (Boca Raton, Fla.) added eight. Six attacks each were dug up by
Talley and Blackstock.
Chattanooga did record a match-high nine blocks with Teter
leading the way with five, two of which were solo. Sophomore middle blocker Aniesha
Christie (Alpharetta, Ga.) registered four and Talley contributed three.
“We still have to find a way for players to step up and make
plays when the game is on the line," said Filar. "That goes for passers, servers, attackers
and diggers.”
The Mountaineers were paced offensively by Ana Wagner with
10 kills and Kasey Sauls with 27 assists. Three Appalachian State players in
Kelly Rhein, Courtney Rein and Wager recorded at least 10 digs.
In the first set, Chattanooga came out firing and took a
10-3 lead on a block assisted by Camacho and Christie. The Mountaineers
responded with a 11-3 run of their own to knot the match at 14-all.
Three-straight points for Appalachian State provided it with a 20-18 lead and
closed the frame out at 25-20.
The Mocs were paced by Blackstock and Kuroski with five
kills each, while Passmore added seven digs. Both squads totaled seven attacking
errors, but Appalachian State notched 15 kills compared to the 11 by Chattanooga.
A three-point lead was earned by the Mocs in the second set
at 9-6, but the Mountaineers fought back to knot it at 10. Appalachian State
pulled ahead at 18-14 before Chattanooga scored on four of the next five
rallies to tie the frame at 19. The score would stay tied till 22-all and the
Mountaineers scored on three-straight rallies to take a 2-0 lead in the match,
25-22.
Following the intermission, the Mountaineers controlled the third
set from the start notching a 25-13 victory. Errors once again hurt the Mocs
committing nine of them during the frame.
“We will get back to work on Tuesday and have another match
to prepare for on Wednesday," said Filar. "We will try and build some momentum going into the
next conference match at Wofford.”
Chattanooga returns home following a five-match road trip on
Wednesday against Mercer at 6 p.m. inside Maclellan Gym. The Mocs return to
conference action on Saturday with a trip to Wofford and the first serve is set
for 7 p.m.
