KENNESAW, Ga. - Senior middle blocker Ellie Kuhn (San
Antonio, Texas) had a career day for the Chattanooga Mocs (1-6) in a five set loss to
Winthrop (4-2), 3-2 (25-18, 26-28, 25-17, 26-28, 15-11), to wrap up the KSU Owls Invitational
on Saturday. The San Antonio, Texas native was named to the all-tournament team
and led the match with 21 kills and six blocks, while adding eight digs.
"Ellie is a leader and played like an upperclassman today,"
said head coach Travis Filar. "She led with her play and voice on the court. She had a phenomenal
match and was a go-to player for us."
Chattanooga rallied in the fourth set to send the match to a
decisive fifth frame. The match contained 27 ties and 12 lead changes.
Sophomore setter Tess Kosycarz (Temecula, Calif.) notched
her fourth career double-double totaling 50 assists and 10 digs. She also added
two aces.
Also contributing to the offense was sophomore outside
Jennifer Kuroski (Acworth, Ga.) and junior right side Christina Teter (Signal
Mountain, Tenn.) with 11 kills each. Freshman outside Jessi Blackstock (Killen,
Ala.) registered six kills and five digs during the contest.
Leading the defensive effort was freshman libero Melissa Green
(Boca Raton, Fla.) with a season-best 19 digs. Junior defensive specialist
Paula Passmore (Merritt Island, Fla.) added 12 digs, while sophomore Andrea Johnson
(Soddy Daisy, Tenn.) and Blackstock each had five.
Chattanooga as a team totaled recorded more kills (58),
assists (55) and digs (73) than its opponent.
"When we realize our potential, we can be a really good
team," said head coach Travis Filar." If we are playing up to that potential,
then we can be very challenging to play. We have to realize how hard that is
and have to realize that it will never be about one person alone. It will
always be about the team."
Winthrop was paced by Becca Toor with 15 kills and Stephanie
Palmer registered 43 assists. The defense was headed up by Catherine Brusie
with 24 digs along with Delaney Forsythe and Luaren Landsman, who each
contributed nine.
The first set saw Winthrop jump out to a 10-5 lead before
the Mocs came back to 13-12 on back-to-back-to-back kills by Kuhn and a service
ace from Kuroski. The Eagles would go on to stretch the advantage to 21-14 and
close out the set at 25-18.
The Mocs registered 11 kills during the frame, but made nine
costly mistakes.
One of two long sets occurred during the second as the Mocs
opened with a 13-10 advantage on a kill by Kuhn, but Winthrop would score
four-straight points to take the lead. The Mocs would not be denied as they notched
a four-point run of their own, 19-15.
Once again, the Eagles battled back to tie the set at 20 and
21. Kills by Kuhn and Kuroski provided Chattanooga with a 24-22 advantage.
Winthrop scored three points in a row to get to set point, but the Mocs fought
back on a kill by Blackstock to take the frame 28-26.
There were 11 ties and five lead changes in the thrilling
set between the two squads. Winthrop led the frame in kills with 17 compared to
14 for Chattanooga. Kuhn led the Mocs effort recording six kills and three
kills were added by Blackstock and Teter.
Chattanooga was unable to continue the momentum going into
the third frame as the Eagles began with an 11-7 advantage and went on to close
the set with a 25-17 victory. Winthrop recorded 10 kills, but took advantage of
11 errors by the Mocs.
The fourth set was fun to watch for the fans as it saw 11
ties and four lead changes. Starting out with the lead was Winthrop up 8-4, but the Mocs came back to tie the
match at 11 on two aces from Johnson and back-to-back kills from Teter.
As the teams battled for each point till the end, it was
Chattanooga staying ahead by a point with ties at 22, 23, 24, 25 and 26 before
Kuhn ended the frame with two-straight kills. She notched six kills along with Kuroski.
During the set, Chattanooga recorded a season-best 20 kills
on just seven errors, while hitting .295.
"I told the team after the match that we played some really
great volleyball," said Filar. "We had glimpses of it, but now it is about
being consistent."
The decisive fifth set had a feel that it was going to be
all Winthrop as it took a 9-2 lead. Chattanooga continued to battle and came
within 13-9 on two blocks from Kuhn and a kill by the San Antonio, Texas
native.
