Postgame Quotes
Wofford at Chattanooga
Chattanooga, Tenn. - McKenzie Arena
Jan. 12, 2012
Chattanooga Head Coach John Shulman
On Chattanooga's win over Wofford:
"To be able to win a basketball game on the defensive end, I am tickled to death. You're not going to be able to score a lot of points on those guys. They can really guard. That's why they're first in the league in defensive points given up and we're second. Some games are going to look like that. It felt like we missed 112 free throws, but we kept battling. Z. Mason looked like a man. We needed an inside presence, and he gave us an inside presence. It has taken us a long time to get to .500, but I am really proud of our team to battle through some adversity with Omar Watted. We just won a basketball game going 2-18 from the three point line. We could not have done that last year. When you shoot well, you're going to win basketball games. When you don't, it's too easy to say you're going to lose a basketball game. I am proud of our kids. We are now 8-1 when we out rebound our opponents. We need to continue to do a good job on the glass, and we're making people shoot it from the three point line."
Thoughts on the play of sophomore Z. Mason:
"He hasn't played in a long time. He is getting better. I thought tonight we got on his back, and he took us to the Promised Land. We all thought he could do that. At times he can still rock and roll, but at other times look like he hasn't played in two years. But I thought he done a fantastic job."
Thoughts on Omar Wattad's defensive play:
"I thought Omar Wattad did a pretty good job defensively. Only two points for him, but I thought he played good. That's scary. I think when he got hit in the head he lost focus on how far away he was from the basket. I thought he did a nice job defensively. If your shot isn't going, you have to find other ways to help your team, and that was a team effort."
Omar Wattad, Senior, Forward
On the injury sustained early in the first half:
"I think it was Lee Skinner. They swung the ball to Brad Loesing. He pump faked and Skinner was crashing the glass pretty tough. I went to box, and out of the corner of my eye I see Loesing swing it and continue toward the basket. I was trying to move to get in the help and his elbow hit me. He didn't do it on purpose so it's all good. It was an accident and things like that happen in basketball. I got about six stitches in the training room and I was good to go. I just wanted to get back out there."
Thoughts on defensive play:
"It's no secret that people lock in on me when I am on offense, and I just missed them. I don't even know how many shots I took, but I knew every time I was got I was going to put a hand in someone's face coming off the screens. I wanted to guard, box out, pass the ball and do other things to get the win. We've got so much talent offensively and that lets me do other things when I'm not getting the opportunity to get shots up. It's about the team winning."
Z. Mason, Sophomore, Forward
On improving play as the season goes on:
"I'm just trying to bring whatever I have to the team. Coach Shulman has been preaching about effort and energy all week, and I just tried to be one of those guys. Jahmal Burroughs is one of those guys, and I just try to follow him. I try to play my hardest, get boards and box out. Just doing the small things we've worked on all week. It all just came together for tonight's game."
Thoughts on Wofford's physicality:
"They were some pretty big guys. I wouldn't say I had a physical advantage. I just try to get to the glass and get in position to rebound. On defense, try to keep them off the glass. Skinner is a great offensive rebounder. Coach has been preaching it to us all week and I just tried my best to keep them from getting rebounds and second chance shots."
Wofford Head Coach Mike Young
Opening Statement
"I don't know if I've ever seen or been a part of a game quite like that one. Hats off to Chattanooga. They played very hard, and they did a very nice job of contesting us on the defensive end. It's no great secret they deserved to win the game. We never took the lead, although we took a couple of stabs at them. We tied it on a couple of occasions, but they were the better team tonight. I like what they're doing. I like their pieces, and they're playing very hard."
