Box Score The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's tennis team had a tough opening to its Southern Conference schedule with a 7-0 loss to the College of Charleston today. The Lady Mocs drop to 8-2 overall while the Cougars improve to 6-4 and 2-0 in league play.
College of Charleston, the three-time defending SoCon champions, got off to a hot start, winning all three doubles matches in quick fashion. Only the No. 2 doubles between UTC's senior Shaina Singh (Vancouver, B.C.) and junior Jenna Nurik (Roswell, Ga.) and CofC's Jenny Falcone and Kelly Kambourelis. The match was tied at five, but the Cougars won three of the last four games to complete the doubles sweep.
The outcome didn't hang in the balance long once the singles started. The College of Charleston won the first four in straight sets. They also won the first set at No. 3 and No. 4.
Senior Emily Hangstefer (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) battled back in her second set at No. 4 against Samantha Maddox. She won the tiebreaker 7-4 to take the frame 7-6. With the outcome of the match decided, they played a 10-point super-tiebreaker to decide the match. Hangstefer got up 8-7, but dropped the last the points to lose 10-8.
Playing the No. 3 slot for the Lady Mocs, freshman Kaylene Chadwell (Franklin, Tenn.) fought back in her second set to win 6-0 against Caroline Newman. She could not close out the win, falling in the super-breaker 10-4.
"College of Charleston played like a championship team today," stated UTC head coach Jeff Clark. "We came out flat in the doubles and didn't play well enough in the singles to win. We will bounce back and be ready to go on Sunday."
