The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's tennis team advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2013 Southern Conference Tournament with a 4-0 win over Western Carolina today. The sixth-seeded Lady Mocs will face No. 3 seed Furman on Friday at 11:00 a.m. in Elon, N.C.
WCU (1-16) only suited up five players, so sophomore Claire Mulyadi (Semarang, Indonesia) and freshman Jovana Pecovski (Apatin, Serbia) won their doubles match with a walkover at No. 3. Junior Alexa Flynn (Memphis, Tenn.) and freshman Kelsey Coots (Huntsville, Ala.) clinched the doubles point with an 8-1 win over Stacia Kissell and Shannon Bettiol at No. 1. They improved to 9-0 as a doubles team.
Pecovski made it 2-0 with a walkover at No. 6. Coots scored a (6-3, 6-0) win over Nicole Nielly at No. 3 while freshman Kayla Jones (Memphis, Tenn.) clinched the win with a (6-2, 6-2) win over Kissell at No. 1. It was Jones' 30th singles win of the season while Coots improved to 23-8.
The match against the Paladins is set for the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center at Elon. The Mocs will try to snap a 22-match losing streak to Furman. Chattanooga's last win in the series was a 4-3 victory on April 5, 1997, in Greenville. The Paladins squeaked out a 4-3 win in a seven-hour match in Chattanooga on March 24.
