CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The Chattanooga Mocs volleyball team, despite jumping out to a 1-0 lead over Western Carolina in Cullowhee, N.C., Friday night, eventually fell 3-1 to the Catamounts.  UTC was bested 25-21, 16-25, 19-25 and 23-25.

It took four Catamounts hitters recording double-digit kills to upend the Mocs, while Chattanooga had two register doubles.  Sophomore Kristy Wieser (Lincoln, Neb.) totaled 11 kills, and junior Briana Reid (Houston, Texas) posted a double-double with a team-leading 16 kills and 14 digs.

On defense, UTC was out-blocked 7.0-4.0 with five Mocs scoring either a solo or assisted block.  Reid led the effort with two assisted blocks, while sophomores Allie Davenport (Tyrone, Ga.) and Nicole Sumida (Hixson, Tenn.) each tallied one solo block.

The Mocs hit .233 in the first set and out-scored Western 25-21.  Of the team's 53 kills, 17 came in the first frame.  After a back-and-forth scoring affair near the end of the set, Wieser closed out the stanxa with a kill to give UTC a 1-0 lead.

However, the Catamounts caught fire in the second set to down the Mocs by nine points, hitting a ridiculous .538 with 15 kills on 26 attempts.  Jordan Timmerman and Caitlin Piechota each totaled 14 points each.

Western took the last two sets by six and two points to hold off UTC for its seventh Southern Conference win.  With the loss, UTC drops to 5-7 in the league.  The Mocs are back in action Saturday night as they take on ETSU in Johnson City, Tenn., at 7 p.m.  Live stats for the game are available via the schedule page.
