Mocs Host Southeastern & Cumberland Saturday

UTC is back on the mat in dual action this weekend.

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team returns to dual match competition this weekend, hosting NAIA's No. 20 Cumberland and Southeastern (Fla.) University.
 
Action begins at 9:00 a.m. (E.S.T.) in Maclellan Gym on Saturday, Nov. 14.  Competition runs straight through with only a short break between duals. 
 
Live stats are available for both UTC matches.  Links are on the wrestling schedule page on GoMocs.com.  There will not be live video for Saturday's action.

CHATTANOOGA MOCS (0-1, 0-0 SOCON)
The Mocs are picked to win the Southern Conference race for the 30th time since joining the league in 1978.  UTC returns six starters and four NCAA qualifiers from last year's team that went 13-6 overall and 7-0 in league action. 
 
Chattanooga almost scored an upset over No. 24 Stanford last weekend, falling to the Cardinal 19-16 in Maclellan Gym.  UTC then went on to a strong showing at the Hokie Open. 
 
Head Coach Heath Eslinger is in his seventh season at UTC.  A two-time Southern Conference Coach of the Year, he owns a 74-42 (.638) career dual record.

The Mocs are young at the top of their lineup, with seven freshmen listed among the probables in the first six weight classes.  Junior's Scottie Boykin and Jared Johnson lead the Mocs.  Boykin is currently No. 12 at 197 while Johnson is up to No. 16 at heavyweight.
 
SOUTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY FIRE (0-0, 0-0 THE SUN)
The is the first season of competition for the Fire.  They competed in The Citadel Open on Nov. 1 in Charleston, S.C., and the Georgia College Open with Cumberland on Nov. 8 in Royster, Ga.
 
SEU is coached by former Moc Javier Maldando.  Maldanado was a three-time SoCon Champion at 125 pounds from 2006-08.  He was a part of the 2007 team that finished 21st at the NCAAs and his 82 wins are currently 10th all-time at UTC.

Freshman Ethan Owen has had an impressive start to his career, winning both The Citadel Open and the Georgia College Open at 133 pounds.  He has six pins and an 10-0 record to start the year. 
 
CUMBERLAND BULLDOGS (0-0, 0-0 MID SOUTH)
This is the first dual action for Cumberland of the season.  The Bulldogs competed in the Patriot Open in Williamsburg, K.y, and the Georgia College Open in Royster, Ga., so far this season.  They were No. 20 in the Intermat preseason NAIA rankings.  
 
UTC is 8-0 all-time against Cumberland, including a 46-0 win in the last meeting on Nov. 8, 2013.  The Mocs are 6-0 in the series in Maclellan Gym.

Nate Croley won at the Patriot Open and finished second last weekend at the Georgia College Open.  Orlando Nawade won at Georgia College and placed second at the Patriot Open.
