The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's tennis team defeated the Alabama State University Hornets this afternoon 7-0. The Mocs came out ready to play after a week away from the court, improving their record to 10-2 on the year.
Chattanooga began the day by sweeping the doubles at No. 2, 3, and 1, respectively. This put the Mocs up 1-0 in the match.
The Mocs continued to dominate in the singles play when Sophomore Rachele Gazzola posted a (6-0, 6-0) win over Brianna Fairley in straight sets at No. 6. Junior Kelsey Coots followed her with a (6-0, 6-0) victory over Brankica Orlovic at No. 2 in straight sets as well.
Freshman Samantha Caswell secured the victory for the Mocs when she posted a (6-0, 6-2) win over Matabe Achoachere at No. 4. Senior C.C Mulyadi battled back in the third set to pull out a (6-0, 2-6, 1-0 (4)) win over Nicole Tekelova at No. 5.
Chattanooga finished the sweep over the Hornets after Junior Kayla Jones and Senior Kaylene Chadwell both walked away with victories at No. 1 and No. 3 respectfully to end the day for the Mocs.
“We took care of our business today,” stated head coach Jeff Clark. “It was our first match in a week and sometimes when you have had a few days off over spring break there might be a little rust. If there was any rust we shook it off pretty quickly and had a good day.”
Chattanooga improves to 10-2 overall and 1-0 in SoCon action while Alabama State dropped to 5-7 on the year. The Mocs are back in action on Thursday, March 19th, against UAB. Chattanooga will visit the Blazers in Birmingham, Alabama at 2:00 p.m. (E.S.T.).
