Chattanooga Well Represented at Pan American Games

Osterman, Marchant bring home Bronze Medals

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga was well represented at this year's Pan American Games held in Toronto, Canada, with two Bronze medals. Former softball standout Nicole Osterman (2015) helped Puerto Rico to a third place finish while track star Lanni Marchant finished third in the women's 10,000 meter run.

Osterman started all 50 games for the Mocs this past season leading UTC to the Southern Conference regular season title and tournament crown while advancing to the NCAA Tournament. At the Pan Am Games she had a two-run hit that led to the team's two runs against The Netherlands. Osterman also represented Puerto Rico in the 2012 World Cup played in Oklahoma City and the 2013 Pan Am Games.

Also representing softball for UTC was Ninja Suetsugu (2013) and Vivian Morimoto (2012) who represented a Brazil team that placed fourth in the games. This was the duo's fourth time representing their country in the Pan Am Games (2007, 2009, 2013, 2015) and they were also on the national team at the 2012 World Cup Games.

"It's awesome that we have such great representation," Chattanooga softball head coach Frank Reed said. "This is an indication of the quality of student-athletes we have here at UTC. They have trained hard and have done a great job representing Chattanooga, UTC and their country."

Canada beat Team USA for the Pan Am title this season.

Marchant brought home the Bronze for her home country of Canada at this year's Pan Am games, running the 10,000 meter. The Canadian women's marathon record holder opted for the shorter distance after sustaining an injury while training for the distance race.

She battled it out against American Desiree Davila-Linden for most of the race and both were outkicked at the end by Mexico's Brenda Flores who won with a time of 32:41.33. Linden crossed the line about three seconds later with Marchant a few behind her at 32:46.03.

Marchant was the 2006 UTC Scrappy Moore Award recipient and named the 2007 Southern Conference Female Athlete of the Year. She graduated with honors from UTC with an Economics degree and holds a dual law degree from the University of Ottawa and Michigan State.
