The roster is updated and ready to go.
If you haven't visited GoMocs.com in a few days, you may have missed a few things. To begin with, we switched over to a new look, thanks to a new partnership with Sidearm Sports that began on Aug. 1. Also, the 2015 football roster is now complete with all of the transfers, signees and invited walk-ons added to the list.
UTC Football 2015 RosterSome guys are bigger, some guys are smaller (not by much), while others are in new numbers for the upcoming season. We still have to add in head shots of the newcomers following the team's photo shoot next week. However, for those scoring at home, most of the pertinent information is now up-to-date.
Shuffling of numbers seems to always happen in the offseason. Upperclassmen graduate and the younger guys scramble to get their favorite jersey that was occupied when they first joined the program.
Sometimes there is a good story behind why individuals wear a certain number, but in other cases they just take what was given.
Incoming freshman
Le'Vonte Larry had no say in the No. 27 he will sport in 2015. However, he didn't seem to mind. "I did not pick it, but I like it. It is the same number as Rashean Mathis. Plus, I like the way it looks."
Sometimes there are family ties to a number, as the case with
Tavon Lawson and
Derrick Craine. Lawson wore No. 10 as a freshman in 2014, but is switching to No. 4. He wanted his old high school No. 1, but could not pry that away from classmate
Trevor Wright. Instead, he went with his father and uncle's old number they wore in their playing days.
Craine had No. 41 as a true freshman but switched to 34. That is the same number his father (Don) had during his collegiate career at Pittsburgh (1973-75).
A lot of the other changes were tied to high school days.
Branden Parker wanted to wear No. 55 last season, since it was the same number he hard sported since he got his first start as an offensive lineman as a junior at Miller Grove High School in Lithonia, Ga. Unfortunately,
Chris Mayes already had that one, so Parker settled for 51 last season. With Mayes graduated, Parker jumped right back into his old number.
De'Juan McQuarters wore No. 10 in his breakout sophomore season at Mitchell High School in Memphis. Lawson's move to No. 4 allowed him to move back to No. 10, with the hopes of another impact year as a speedy receiver.
Freshman receiver
Bingo Morton could not get his high school No. 23, so he added those up to move to No. 5. He shares that number with junior linebacker
Nakevion Leslie.
Junior receiver
C.J. Board also went back to his high school roots. He grabbed
Tommy Hudson's old No. 8 in the offseason.
Junior receiver
Drae Bowles had a deeper meaning behind his choice of No. 7. "God created the world in seven days as a blessing to all of us, and I think it is a blessing to play football. That is why I wear No. 7."
Some guys put a lot of thought into the number they wear, others don't. It is all a personal preference, and there are a lot of numbers Mocs fans need to think about over the next few weeks. See our suggestions below:
