1/22/2016 9:33:00 AM | Cross Country & Track & Field
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's track and field team will open the 2016 indoor season at the Emory Crossplex Invitational at the Birmingham Crossplex in Alabama on Sunday, January 24.
Â
The Mocs will feature several returning athletes as well as a few newcomers. Teghan Henderson (Pickering, Ontario) will lead Jessica York (Normandy, Tenn.), Madalyn Garland (Evansville, Tenn.) and Keeley Stewart (Winchester, Tenn.) in the Mile.
Â
"This will be Teghan's first time running the Mile," Chattanooga head coach Bill Gautier said. "We're looking for her to do really well. Jessica York will continue to represent us well and we're looking for her to do well in the event as well. Keeley Stewart has been a consistent runner for us throughout her career."
Â
Another runner stepping into an unfamiliar event is Maddison Melchionna (Afton, Tenn.). She, along with Kiaana Howard (Nashville, Tenn.) and Chandler Rogers (Loudon, Tenn.), will run the 400 meter.
Â
"This is Kiaana's senior year and she is hoping to be a conference contender," Gautier said. "While this isn't Maddison's event, it is Kiaana's."
Â
Newcomers Haley Morris (Lenoir City, Tenn.), Lily McKee (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Madison Watson (Chattanooga, Tenn.) will all run the women's 800 meter race. Anna Kate Chance (Columbia, Tenn.), Katie DeMars (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Helenka Kis (Columbia, Tenn.) will run in the much longer 3000 meter race. The 200 meter will have Howard, Rogers, Mercedes Bright (Kingsport, Tenn.) and Makala Diggs (Box Elder, S.D.).
Â
"Anna Kate Chance had a really good cross country season," Gautier said. "We'll be looking for good things from her."
Â
Nicole Sumida will compete in the women's High Jump.
Â
Track events will begin at 10 a.m. Eastern time Sunday with the Mocs' first event at 1:10 p.m. Eastern time with the Mile Run. Live scoring and results will be available at the women's track schedule page on GoMocs.com.
