CHATTANOOGA---The Chattanooga Mocs men's golf team is hitching up the wagons and heading west for the third tournament of the season. They tee off Friday in Scottsdale, Ariz., at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate.
Mirabel Golf Club (Par 71/7,147 yards) awaits a power-packed 15-team field. Twelve of the 15 earned NCAA team postseason berths with seven advancing to the NCAA Championships with two of those, LSU and South Carolina, qualifying for match play.
"This is an outstanding field," coach Mark Guhne stated. "That means it is a great opportunity for our golf team. It is a tremendous challenge, no doubt about it. We look forward to meeting it this weekend."
Guhne's starting lineup includes Andrew Weathers (72.83), Wes Gosselin (73.83), Lake Johnson (75.00), Brooks Thomas (75.83) and Will Porter with Stuart Thomas playing as an individual. Porter and S. Thomas are making their first appearances of 2016-17.
The Mocs are looking to get off to a better start. In the opening two events, they've closed strong with a final-round scoring mark of 289.00. That's had to offset a 300.00 average over the first 36 holes.
"Absolutely have to get off to a better start," Guhne concurred. "There's no secret formula…no 'special sauce' to make it happen. It's executing the plan from the practice round through the 54th hole.
"I think, for the most part, our ball-striking has been good enough. We are losing strokes around the greens. We've worked hard on our putting and game management as a whole to limit the big numbers that haunted us the first two weeks."
