Mocs Stay Close to Home this Weekend at Carpet Capital Collegiate

Lake Johnson and the Chattanooga Mocs men’s golf team begins play Friday at the Carpet Capital Collegiate in nearby Rocky Face, Ga.

CHATTANOOGA---Travel back to September 2008. This same weekend that year, the Chattanooga Mocs men's golf team put itself on the national landscape. It's when the program captured the prestigious Carpet Capital Collegiate Championship leading to a No. 1 ranking just a few weeks later.
Like most coaches, Mark Guhne doesn't like to look back, rather he prefers to focus on his current squad.
"It was a very special win," Guhne said with a smile. "That's something that can't be taken away, but it was another time, another team. This (The Farm) is a special place, and I'm excited to see what this group can do here."
Known as the "Masters of Collegiate Golf," the Carpet Capital annually attracts one of the top fields in the nation. This year's has Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Georgia Tech, LSU, South Carolina and Virginia from the power 5 conferences, as well as three other mid-majors looking to make their mark just like the Mocs. Add in emerging NAIA-power Dalton State, coached by UTC alum Ben Rickett, and it's a three-day gauntlet ahead for all 14 squads.
The Mocs are led by junior Andrew Weathers. He is coming off a top 10 finish in last weekend's opening event shooting -1 at the Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate. His career-best round of 5-under par 67 came in the first round of the 2014 Carpet Capital Collegiate.
Weathers is joined this week by Wes Gosselin, Lake Johnson, Etienne Brault and Brooks Thomas. Gosselin finished sixth in the Carpet Capital last year with an even-par 216 and is making his fourth appearance in the event. It's the third start at the Farm for Thomas and the second for Weathers and Johnson. Brault and individual Phillip Hickam are playing in their first Carpet Capital.
"We had a strong finish on Monday (-2, 286)," Guhne added. "It will be interesting to see how well that carries over. There is no question we have the talent to play well here, the execution is just as crucial on a course like this.
"We're excited to get started."
The three-day, 54-hole tournament starts Friday and ends Sunday on the 7,012-yard, par 72 tract. Admission is free and the course is located approximately 35 minutes from campus in downtown Chattanooga.
Past winners include PGA Tour winners Stewart Cink, D.J. Trahan, Bill Haas, Chesson Hadley, Kyle Stanley and Justin Thomas. Among the top players to come through the Farm in recent years include Jordan Spieth (Texas) as well as our own Mr. 58 Stephan Jaeger and 2012 U.S. Amateur champion Steven Fox.
